During his 2008 campaign, President Barack Obama expressed willingness to be lenient in regards to medical marijuana, provoking the idea that the go-ahead was given to open dispensaries in states that have active medicinal marijuana legislation. Since his election, he has proved otherwise, maintaining an increasingly resistant stance toward the entire medical marijuana industry. Just last month, U.S. Attorney John Walsh contacted 23 dispensaries located near schools warning them to shut down or suffer federal punishment, regardless of the fact that those businesses are abiding by state laws.
On February 10th, 2012, medical marijuana activists held a conference to announce the Patient Voter Project, a campaign that hopes to gain the awareness of patients that hold medicinal marijuana prescriptions. This campaign is based in Colorado, where the presidential race in expected to run tight, however, it extends across the nation and has connections to many national lobbying groups.
