Adam and Eve were given life by God, and were placed in the Garden of Eden. God made an explicit rule that they could eat from any tree except the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. As many of you all know the serpent coaxed Eve to eat the fruit who then gave Adam the fruit.
This is where my commentary comes in. If an omnipotent, omniscient, and immortal being cannot control two people why do governments who base many of their current prohibition laws on religion force this concept. You would think that many religious individuals would learn that people naturally have shortcomings. For example, trying a substance that may not be the healthiest choice you can make. Why go on incarcerating people when our “religious ancestors” could not overcome the curiosity of using unknown and forbidden substances.
Although drug use could be addressed as a problem, which in many cases it is, I have a firm belief that incarceration is not the best way to go about treating addiction and drug use. I also want to reiterate that this story of Adam and Eve is religious text that people can gain insight from. In my opinion it should not be taken literally, but the meanings and values derived from it can still be valuable.
