A report by RAND Corp. a non-profit agency revealed interesting facts about crime and the presence of Medical Marijuana Dispensaries. The RAND Corp. study viewed the crime rates within three blocks of a dispensary 10 days before and 10 days after dispensaries closed down due to an ordinance in L.A. The study showed that crime spiked by 59% around dispensaries that closed in comparison to ones that remained open.
The study reported these drops in crime may be a result of less foot traffic because of the stop in business, and store security cameras were no longer functioning.
The results are not startling to an educated individual that knows that prohibition is the number 1 creator of crime. Unfortunately, individuals in politics and law enforcement try to pass agendas that are not based on fact or logical reasoning. One such example is, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca. Sheriff Baca asserted last year that all dispensaries are a front for crime and are operating illegally to begin with.
Despite these findings, the study has already met with fierce opposition. The city attorney’s office called the study “deeply flawed” and had many mistaken assumptions, irrelevant data, and untested measurements.
On the other hand Councilman Ed Reyes called the report an “eye opener” and warranted more investigation.
It seems like the obvious results are finally being reflected in studies. Prohibition causes crime not marijuana.
