Oregon is the next state poised to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. Initiative Petition 53 garnered more than 87,000 signatures which qualifies it for the November ballot. If all goes well, Oregon could become the third state behind Washington and Colorado to legalize recreational use of weed. A recent poll showed that 57% of likely voters supported the legalization of recreational marijuana. In addition, the states’s governor has expressed his support for marijuana legalization if a bill were to come across his desk.
Oregon already has a medical marijuana program in place and they were the first state to decriminalize the possession of cannabis way back in 1973. An effort to legalize cannabis products and make them available in a retail environment failed in 2010. The Oregon Cannabis Tax Act did not collect enough signatures to put the referendum on the ballot. The marijuana movement has gained momentum over the past four years and all signs point towards Oregon becoming the next state to embrace legal marijuana.
