Are you scared? You should be. The federal government has been slowly taking our civil liberties, and our white knight, Barack Obama, has just renewed the act for another 4 years. After publicly speaking out against it in 2005, President Obama has really lost touch with his original campaign promises.
“According to a July 2009 report from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, only three of the 763 “sneak-and-peek” requests in fiscal year 2008 involved terrorism cases. Sixty-five percent were drug related.” (Alternet) A “sneak-and-peek” search is defined as an authorized search of an office or home without a person being informed. Also, property can be seized , and all your personal records from library checkouts to medical records can be seized.
1984? Big Brother is watching you? I would say yes. These are direct violations of our unalienable rights presented in the Bill of Rights. In an effort to fight war and people who oppose American freedom, we have been transformed into a surveillance state. We are wasting more tax payer resources fighting the drug war that cannot be won, and we are slowly and surely regressing into a state that limits freedom under the pretense that we are trying to win wars.
George Orwell has disturbingly predicted the rise of a surveillance state. He was only off by some 20 years. Americans are being incarcerated at ridiculous levels, we are waging wars for doubtful reasons, and we are losing our civil liberties more quickly then we are gaining our freedom and security in wars domestically and abroad.
