Washington D.C. has moved one step closer to implementing its budding medical marijuana program today. The city’s Department of Health has began accepting applications for grow centers from a pool of scrutinized letters of intent. Over 50 hopefuls are competing for the rights to operate 10 cultivation centers in the district.
The city government also announced today that a revision to the program rules will be released on August 12, which may affect some of the application requirements. The application process carries a $5,000 fee and is open until September, when a five member committee will select the 10 lucky candidates based on a long list of criteria. Each of the approved centers will be allowed to cultivate 95 plants in varying stages of maturity at one time.
Officials also announced earlier this week they hope to have the program operational for patients by May of next year. However, when applications for dispensaries will begin to be accepted has yet to be announced while patients eagerly wait.
