Dispensaries in Los Angeles

Los Angeles has 158 dispensaries licensed by the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC). Any adult 21 or older with a valid government photo ID, including tourists with an out-of-state license or passport, can shop, and 153 stores also hold a medicinal license for patients 18 and older. State rules allow sales only from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the City of Los Angeles adds its own 10% business tax on adult-use cannabis sales.

No city in our national directory has more licensed cannabis stores than Los Angeles. This page covers stores the DCC lists under a Los Angeles address; Valley neighborhoods such as North Hollywood and Van Nuys have their own pages because the state lists them under their postal names.

Cannabis Taxes in Los Angeles

Every sale carries California's 15% cannabis excise tax, collected at checkout. Sales tax applies on top, and the rate in the City of Los Angeles is 9.75%. The city also levies its own gross receipts tax on licensed cannabis businesses: 10% on adult-use sales and 5% on medical sales. That tax is imposed on the store rather than the shopper, but it shapes shelf prices, and some stores show it as a separate line on the receipt. Compare out-the-door prices, and see our cannabis prices by state report for how California compares.

Medical Marijuana in Los Angeles

153 of the stores on this page are licensed for medicinal sales, shown with a Medical badge. Patients 18 and older need a recommendation from a California physician. Patients who also show a state Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC) and government ID pay no sales tax on medicinal cannabis, but they still pay the 15% excise tax.
