Illinois Dispensaries by City
Every Illinois city and town with at least one licensed cannabis dispensary is listed here, largest first. Chicago has far more stores than anywhere else, but most Illinois towns with a dispensary have only one or two, and many towns have none because local governments can ban cannabis stores. Illinois Dispensaries by Region
About six in ten Illinois dispensaries are in Chicago and its suburbs, but every part of the state has licensed stores, and a string of them sits along the borders with states that have not legalized adult-use cannabis. The counts below come from each store's county in the state licence list.
Chicago (40 stores)
The city of Chicago has the most dispensaries of any Illinois city. Just under half of them, 19, also hold a medical licence.
Chicago Suburbs and Collar Counties (140 stores)
Suburban Cook County has 70 stores on its own, from Evanston, Skokie and Niles on the North Shore to Forest Park, Oak Park and Rosemont near O'Hare and Calumet City and Matteson in the south suburbs. DuPage County has 20, led by Villa Park, Naperville and Addison; Lake County has 19, including Mundelein, Waukegan and Fox Lake; Kane and Will have 10 each; McHenry has 7; and Kendall has 4. Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates and Streamwood form a cluster of 10 stores along I-90 in the northwest suburbs.
Northern and Northwest Illinois (28 stores)
Rockford, Loves Park, Belvidere and South Beloit serve the Rockford area and the Wisconsin line. DeKalb, Ottawa, Peru, Dixon and Morris cover the I-88 and I-80 corridors, Kankakee and Bourbonnais sit south of the metro, and Moline and Milan serve the Quad Cities. Galena and East Dubuque have four stores between them in Jo Daviess County.
Central Illinois (50 stores)
Springfield leads the region with 7 stores, followed by the Peoria area (Peoria, East Peoria, Pekin and Peoria Heights, 11 stores combined), Bloomington-Normal (6) and Champaign-Urbana (5). Decatur, Danville, Quincy, Galesburg, Macomb, Jacksonville, Charleston, Mattoon and Effingham each have at least one store, so college towns and I-55, I-57, I-72 and I-74 travelers are covered.
Metro East (15 stores)
Madison and St. Clair counties, across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, have stores in Collinsville, Alton, Edwardsville, Belleville, Fairview Heights, Sauget, Troy, Wood River and Pontoon Beach. Missouri has its own legal adult-use market, and carrying cannabis across the river in either direction is still illegal under federal law.
Southern Illinois (17 stores)
Carbondale and Metropolis have three stores each, and Mount Vernon has two. Marion, Harrisburg, Benton, Anna, Cairo and Olive Branch fill in the rest of the far south, with Grayville, Mount Carmel and Lawrenceville along the Wabash River.
Border Towns
Some of the busiest small-town stores sit on a state line, because Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa have not legalized adult-use cannabis and Kentucky allows only medical use. Look for stores in South Beloit, Antioch, Wadsworth and Winthrop Harbor near Wisconsin; East Dubuque, Galena, Fulton, Moline and Milan near Iowa; Calumet City, Lynwood, Danville and Tilton near Indiana; and Metropolis and Cairo near Kentucky. Buying there is legal, but carrying cannabis back across any state line is illegal under federal law and the law of the neighboring state. See our guides to Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa and Kentucky cannabis laws.
How Illinois Licenses Dispensaries: IDFPR
Illinois legalized adult-use cannabis through its legislature with the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act (Public Act 101-27), signed in 2019, and legal sales began January 1, 2020, under 410 ILCS 705/10-5. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) licenses and inspects dispensaries. The Department of Agriculture licenses growers and processors, and the Department of Public Health runs the medical patient registry.
Unlike Oregon, Illinois limits the number of dispensary licences and has awarded new ones through lotteries built to bring social equity applicants into the business. As of September 10, 2026, IDFPR counted 288 adult-use dispensaries, 178 of them opened by social equity lottery winners, according to its press release.
Cities, villages and counties can ban or restrict cannabis businesses within their borders, which is why stores often cluster in towns that welcome them and sit just over the line from towns that do not. Local governments also decide whether a dispensary may allow on-site consumption, under 410 ILCS 705/55-25.
Buying Cannabis in Illinois: Age, ID, Hours and Purchase Limits
- Age and ID: You must be 21 or older with a valid, unexpired ID showing your photo and date of birth, under 410 ILCS 705/15-85. Out-of-state licences and passports work. People under 21 can buy only through the medical program.
- Hours: Since June 12, 2026, dispensaries may be open from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., subject to local zoning, under 410 ILCS 705/15-70(j). The old closing time was 10 p.m., and stores need local approval to stay open later, so many still keep shorter hours.
- Drive-through and curbside: SB 3222 (Public Act 104-0463) allows pickup and drive-through service once IDFPR approves each store's plan, per the IDFPR fact sheet.
- Payment: Most stores take cash and debit and have an ATM. Credit cards are rarely accepted because cannabis is still illegal under federal law.
- Over the limit: It is illegal to buy, or try to buy, an amount that would put you over your possession limit, and the limits count everything you have, not just one purchase.
| Product | Illinois residents (21+) | Visitors (21+) |
|---|---|---|
| Cannabis flower | 60 grams | 30 grams |
| Cannabis concentrate | 10 grams | 5 grams |
| THC in infused products | 1,000 mg | 500 mg |
These limits, set by 410 ILCS 705/10-10, doubled on June 12, 2026; older guides still list 30 grams for residents and 15 grams for visitors. For possession penalties, driving rules and the rest of the law, see our full guide to Illinois marijuana laws.
Medical Cannabis Dispensaries in Illinois
The Illinois Department of Public Health runs the Medical Cannabis Patient Program, which registers patients with qualifying conditions such as cancer, chronic pain, PTSD, migraines, seizures and multiple sclerosis. SB 3222 added endometriosis, ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids, and the certifying exam can now be done by telemedicine. Adults 18 and older can register on their own; younger patients need a parent or guardian as caregiver.
Since September 10, 2026, any adult-use dispensary in good standing can opt in to a medical licence, and IDFPR issued the first 37 that day. 169 stores in our directory serve patients, shown with a Medical badge. Registered patients buying their medical supply at a licensed medical dispensary pay no cannabis purchaser excise tax and are charged the lower food and drug sales tax rate, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue. An adequate supply is 2.5 ounces every 14 days, and only registered patients may grow at home, up to 5 plants per household.
Illinois Cannabis Taxes and Prices
Adult-use buyers pay the cannabis purchaser excise tax under 410 ILCS 705/65-10, which is based on product type and THC level:
- 10% on cannabis other than infused products with adjusted THC of 35% or less, which covers most flower
- 20% on cannabis-infused products such as edibles
- 25% on cannabis other than infused products with adjusted THC above 35%, which covers most concentrates and vapes
Regular state and local sales tax is added on top, and cities may add a cannabis retailers' occupation tax of up to 3% under 65 ILCS 5/8-11-23. Counties may add up to 3.75% in unincorporated areas and up to 3% inside cities under 55 ILCS 5/5-1006.8. Growers also pay a 7% cultivation privilege tax, which is built into wholesale prices. The total at the register depends on the product and the store's address.
Taxes stacked that way, plus a capped number of licences, have long made Illinois one of the more expensive legal markets in the country. Shoppers save with daily deals, first-visit and loyalty discounts and larger packs, and it pays to compare out-the-door prices rather than shelf tags.
Where You Can and Cannot Use Cannabis in Illinois
- Private residences: Use is allowed in a private home with the owner's permission. Landlords, hotels and private businesses can ban it.
- No public use: The law does not protect use in any public place, including sidewalks, streets and parks, under 410 ILCS 705/10-35. It also bars use on school grounds and school buses, knowingly near anyone under 21 who is not a registered patient, and anywhere the Smoke Free Illinois Act bans smoking.
- Vehicles: Using cannabis in any motor vehicle, moving or parked, is not allowed. Purchases must travel in a sealed, odor-proof, child-resistant container, and since SB 3222 a sealed original dispensary package no longer has to be out of reach.
- Driving: 5 nanograms of THC per milliliter of whole blood within 2 hours of driving is a DUI, and you can be charged at any level if impaired.
- Consumption venues: A dispensary or retail tobacco store may allow on-site consumption only if its city or county has authorized it, so licensed lounges are rare.
- Federal land and flights: Cannabis is illegal on federal property and on planes, even within Illinois. Our federal marijuana law guide explains why.
