Dispensaries in Boston

Boston has 39 dispensaries licensed by the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC). Anyone 21 or older with a valid government photo ID can buy, and that includes visitors with an out-of-state driver's license or a passport. 6 Boston licenses also serve registered medical patients, who pay no marijuana taxes. Boston has more licensed stores than any other community in Massachusetts, spread from the Financial District to Hyde Park.

What sets Boston apart is how its stores got licensed. The city's Cannabis Equity Program gives priority licensing on a 1:1 ratio, so for every non-equity license the Boston Cannabis Board grants, at least one equity license must also be issued. Boston's stores also reach well beyond downtown, into Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan and East Boston, and late hours are common: several stay open until 11 p.m. or close to midnight.

  • Hours: Most Boston stores open at 9 or 10 a.m. and close between 8 p.m. and just before midnight.

Boston and Massachusetts Cannabis Laws: Purchase Limits, Public Use and Driving

Since April 19, 2026, a store may sell you up to 2 ounces of flower a day, or the equivalent of 10 grams of active THC in concentrates or 1,000 mg of active THC in edibles. The limit is combined across products. Adults may carry up to 2 ounces outside the home and keep up to 10 ounces at home. See our Massachusetts marijuana laws guide.

  • Public use: Using cannabis in a public place carries a civil fine of up to $100. Boston Common, the Esplanade, sidewalks, beaches, MBTA stations and trains are all public places.
  • Driving: Driving high is OUI, and an open container in the passenger area carries a fine of up to $500.
  • Logan Airport: Federal law applies at the TSA checkpoint and on flights. TSA refers any cannabis it finds to local police, and carrying it across a state line is illegal.

Question 8: If voters approve Question 8 on November 3, 2026, adult-use retail sales would end on January 1, 2028. Medical sales would continue.
