Michigan Dispensaries by Region

Michigan's stores are spread across both peninsulas, but they cluster around Detroit, along I-94 and next to the Indiana and Ohio lines. Regional counts are based on each store's county.

Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor (230 stores)

Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties hold more stores than any other part of the state. Detroit has the most of any city, and many more sit in the small suburbs just across city lines, such as Hazel Park, Ferndale and Center Line along 8 Mile and the I-75 and I-696 corridors, and Inkster and River Rouge on the west and south sides. Ann Arbor, home of the University of Michigan, and neighboring Ypsilanti form a second cluster in Washtenaw County.

West Michigan and Grand Rapids (96 stores)

Grand Rapids leads West Michigan, and Muskegon, on the Lake Michigan shore, has one of the largest store counts in the state. Smaller clusters serve Lowell and Cedar Springs in Kent County and Big Rapids, home of Ferris State University. Ottawa County, between Grand Rapids and the lakeshore, has only a few stores, in Grand Haven and Nunica.

Mid-Michigan: Lansing, Jackson and Mount Pleasant (77 stores)

Lansing, the state capital, has the most stores in mid-Michigan, with more in East Lansing next to Michigan State University. Jackson anchors the area to the south along I-94, and Mount Pleasant, home of Central Michigan University, has a large count for a city its size. Owosso and Corunna serve Shiawassee County.

Southwest Michigan: Kalamazoo and Battle Creek (75 stores)

Kalamazoo, home of Western Michigan University, and Battle Creek, both on I-94, each have close to 20 stores, and Portage adds several more just south of Kalamazoo. Van Buren and Allegan counties have smaller stores in Paw Paw, South Haven and the lakeshore towns around Saugatuck and Douglas.

The Indiana and Ohio Border (151 stores)

The seven counties along the Indiana and Ohio lines have far more stores than their population alone would explain, because they draw buyers from the south. New Buffalo, just over the Indiana line on I-94, has more stores than any Michigan city except Detroit, and Niles, near South Bend, has its own cluster. Coldwater on I-69 and Sturgis also sit close to Indiana, which has not legalized cannabis. On the Ohio side, Monroe and Luna Pier sit on I-75 near Toledo, and Morenci and Adrian serve Lenawee County. Taking cannabis bought in Michigan into Indiana or Ohio is illegal.

Flint, Saginaw Bay and the Thumb (91 stores)

Flint and neighboring Burton give Genesee County one of the larger store counts outside Detroit. Saginaw and Bay City each have more than a dozen stores, while Midland, between them, has only a couple. Port Huron, at the Blue Water Bridge to Ontario, and Lapeer serve the southern Thumb. Carrying cannabis across the bridge into Canada is illegal.

Northern Lower Peninsula (74 stores)

Traverse City has the most stores up north, with more in Gaylord, Manistee, Cheboygan, Kalkaska and the lake towns along I-75 and US-23. Stores here serve visitors heading to the lakes and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, where cannabis remains illegal because it is federal land.

Upper Peninsula (60 stores)

The Upper Peninsula has stores in most of its larger towns. Menominee and Ironwood sit on the Wisconsin line, and Sault Ste. Marie faces Ontario across the St. Marys River; cannabis is not legal for adult use in Wisconsin, and taking it into Canada is illegal. Marquette and Houghton have stores near their universities, and Munising serves visitors to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, where federal law bans cannabis.

How Michigan Licenses Dispensaries: The Cannabis Regulatory Agency

Michigan voters legalized adult-use cannabis in November 2018 with the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act (MRTMA), which took effect on December 6, 2018. Medical cannabis was already legal under the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act, and licensed medical stores operate under a separate law, the Medical Marihuana Facilities Licensing Act. The Cannabis Regulatory Agency licenses and inspects businesses under both laws.

A Michigan dispensary can hold one of three kinds of licence. Adult-use retailers sell to anyone 21 or older. Provisioning centers are medical stores that sell only to registered patients and caregivers. Microbusinesses grow, process and sell their own cannabis from one location, under a plant cap set by the state. Many stores hold both an adult-use and a medical licence at the same address, and the CRA's municipal guide lists the full set of licence types, including designated consumption establishments and event organizers.

Local governments decide whether stores can open at all. Under MCL 333.27956, a city, village or township may completely prohibit adult-use businesses or limit their number, and residents can petition to put that question on the ballot. Medical provisioning centers work the other way: the CRA will not license one unless the municipality has passed an ordinance that specifically authorizes them. About three in four Michigan local governments had opted out of adult-use businesses as of early 2024, according to CRA figures reported by Cannabis Business Times. State law also keeps stores at least 1,000 feet from a K-12 school unless the town reduces that distance, and out of areas zoned only for homes (MCL 333.27959).

Buying Cannabis in Michigan: Age, ID, Hours and Purchase Limits

  • Age and ID: Adult-use stores must confirm that every buyer is 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID. There is no residency requirement, so out-of-state licences and passports work.
  • Purchase limit: 2.5 ounces per transaction, of which no more than 15 grams may be concentrate (MCL 333.27955). Adults may keep up to 10 ounces at home.
  • Hours: The MRTMA lets each municipality regulate the time, place and manner of a cannabis business's operation, so hours are set locally and vary from town to town.
  • Delivery: Licensed retailers may deliver. Under the CRA's delivery checklist, each delivery is capped at the single-transaction limit, and drivers check ID at the door.
RuleAdult use (21+)
Per transaction2.5 ounces

Medical Marijuana Dispensaries in Michigan

Michigan's medical program still matters for patients under 21 and for anyone who wants a caregiver's help. Patients need a physician's certification and a registry identification card from the CRA. The application fee is $40, and a card is valid for two years. Registered patients 18 and older can buy at provisioning centers; minors qualify through a separate minor-patient application and a caregiver.

85 of the stores in our directory hold a medical licence, shown with a Medical badge, and most of those also sell adult-use cannabis. Under MCL 333.26424, a registered patient may possess 2.5 ounces of usable marijuana and, with no caregiver growing for them, keep 12 plants in a locked, enclosed facility.

Michigan Cannabis Taxes and Prices

Adult-use purchases carry two taxes at the register: a 10% excise tax on the retail price, set by the MRTMA in MCL 333.27963, and Michigan's 6% sales tax. Since January 1, 2026, a third tax applies earlier in the supply chain: a 24% wholesale marijuana tax on the wholesale price of adult-use cannabis, created by 2025 Public Act 23. Treasury deposits that money into a neighborhood road fund. Businesses pay it, but stores can pass it along in shelf prices. The industry's court challenge is still pending, and the tax remains in effect.

Michigan cannabis prices have fallen steeply since legal sales began. Data from the CRA, charted by the Senate Fiscal Agency, show the average price of an ounce of adult-use flower falling from $512 when sales began to $62 by spring 2025, an 88% drop; medical flower fell from $276 to $80. Prices vary a lot from store to store, so compare final prices, daily deals and first-visit discounts.

Where You Can and Cannot Use Cannabis in Michigan

  • Private property: The MRTMA protects private use, but not use in a public place (MCL 333.27954). Property owners and landlords can ban smoking, so check before lighting up at a hotel or rental.
  • Consumption lounges: A municipality may authorize consumption in designated areas closed to anyone under 21, or at special events, and the CRA licenses designated consumption establishments. Few towns allow them, so check locally.
  • Driving: Driving under the influence of marijuana is a crime under MCL 257.625, and smoking in the passenger area of a vehicle on a public road is not protected.
  • Schools and jails: Possessing or using cannabis on preschool or K-12 school grounds, on a school bus or at a correctional facility is not protected.
  • Federal land: Cannabis is illegal in national lakeshores and parks such as Sleeping Bear Dunes, Pictured Rocks and Isle Royale, in national forests and on military bases.
  • State lines: Carrying cannabis into Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin or Canada is illegal, even where it is legal on the other side. See our federal marijuana law guide and our guides to every state's cannabis laws.

Michigan Dispensary FAQ

How many dispensaries are in Michigan?

Our directory lists 854 licensed cannabis stores in Michigan, in 229 cities and towns. Detroit has the most, followed by New Buffalo on the Indiana line and Grand Rapids.

How old do you have to be to buy weed in Michigan?

21, with a valid government-issued photo ID, at adult-use stores. Registered medical patients 18 and older can buy at medical provisioning centers with their registry card.

Can tourists buy weed in Michigan?

Yes. Michigan's adult-use law has no residency requirement, so visitors 21 and older can buy with an out-of-state driver's license or a passport. The same 2.5-ounce limit applies, and the cannabis has to stay in Michigan.

How much weed can you buy in Michigan?

Up to 2.5 ounces in a single transaction, of which no more than 15 grams may be concentrate. Adults can keep up to 10 ounces at home.

What are dispensary hours in Michigan?

They vary by town. The adult-use law lets each city, village or township regulate when cannabis businesses operate, and each store sets its own hours within those rules. Check the store listing before you go.

Do Michigan dispensaries deliver?

Yes, where the store offers it. Licensed retailers may deliver, each delivery is capped at the 2.5-ounce transaction limit, and the driver must check ID at the door.

Why do some Michigan towns have no dispensaries?

Under Michigan law, a municipality can ban cannabis businesses or cap their number, and most local governments have opted out. Possession is still legal for adults there, so many stores sit just across the line in neighboring towns.
