Dispensaries in Detroit

Detroit has 59 dispensaries licensed by the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA). Any adult 21 or older with a valid government photo ID can buy recreational cannabis here, and that includes visitors from other states and countries. 2 Detroit stores also hold a medical license for registered patients. Detroit was a latecomer: the city's first adult-use sales did not start until January 2023, more than three years after the rest of Michigan, because lawsuits forced the city to rewrite its licensing ordinance.

Detroit is now the biggest cannabis market in Michigan by store count. The shape of the market is unusual. Instead of a downtown cluster, most stores line the city's long commercial roads, above all 8 Mile Road along the northern city limit, with more on Warren Avenue, Gratiot Avenue, Mack Avenue and Telegraph Road.

Cannabis Taxes in Detroit

Two taxes show up on a Detroit receipt: Michigan's 10% adult-use excise tax and the 6% state sales tax. Michigan has no local sales taxes, and we found no separate Detroit cannabis tax. Since January 1, 2026, a 24% wholesale marijuana tax also applies, but businesses pay it upstream, so you see it only in shelf prices, not as a line on your receipt. Compare prices in our 2026 cannabis prices by state guide.

Medical Marijuana in Detroit

Most Detroit stores serve adult-use customers only. Registered patients 18 and older with a CRA registry card can shop at the two Green Genie locations, which hold medical licenses. A card costs $40 and lasts two years, and medical sales skip the 10% excise tax.
