Dispensaries in New Buffalo

New Buffalo has 38 dispensaries licensed by the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA). Adults 21 and older with a valid government photo ID can shop, and most customers here are visitors: New Buffalo is the first Michigan town drivers reach on I-94 after crossing the Indiana line, so it is the closest Michigan stop for shoppers from Chicago and northwest Indiana. None of the stores here hold a medical license, so this is an adult-use market. Remember that New Buffalo runs on Eastern time, an hour ahead of Chicago, so a 9 p.m. closing time is 8 p.m. Chicago time.

For a resort town of a few thousand people, the store count is remarkable. In January 2026 WNDU reported that New Buffalo Township had more dispensaries than any other township in Michigan, with more planned, and that the township had asked the state for traffic changes on US-12. Almost every store shares the 49117 ZIP code and sits within a few minutes of the interstate, so comparing prices between several shops in one trip is easy.

All 38 Licensed Dispensaries in New Buffalo, MI

New Buffalo's stores fall along four roads. The largest group lines US-12 as it runs east from the lakeshore toward Three Oaks. A second group sits on M-239, the short state highway that links the I-94 interchange to US-12. A third cluster shares O'Brien Court and Holiday Drive, and a fourth sits on Grand Avenue. Most addresses are in New Buffalo Township rather than the small city itself, but all use a New Buffalo mailing address.

Visiting a Dispensary in New Buffalo: ID, Payment and Hours

  • ID: Bring a valid, unexpired government photo ID showing you are 21 or older. Illinois and Indiana driver's licenses work; Michigan has no residency requirement.
  • Time zone: New Buffalo is on Eastern time. If you are driving from Chicago, the store hours you see are one hour later than your clock.
  • Payment: Most stores take cash and debit, and many have ATMs. Credit cards are rarely accepted.
  • Busy times: Summer weekends bring beach traffic as well as shoppers, and US-12 can back up near the interstate.

New Buffalo and Michigan Cannabis Laws: Purchase Limits, Public Use and Driving

Michigan legalized adult-use cannabis in 2018. Our Michigan marijuana laws guide has the full rules.

RuleAdults 21+
Per transaction2.5 ounces, no more than 15 grams of it concentrate
Carry in public2.5 ounces
Keep at home10 ounces

  • The Indiana problem: Indiana has not legalized cannabis, and possession there is a crime. Every route from New Buffalo back to Illinois passes through Indiana, so carrying cannabis home to Chicago means carrying it through a state where it is illegal. Crossing any state line with cannabis also breaks federal law.
  • Public use: Using cannabis on the public beach, in parks, on the street or in a parking lot is not protected. Use it on private property where the owner allows it, and check your rental's rules.
  • Driving: Driving while impaired by marijuana is a crime in Michigan, and smoking in a car on a public road is not protected.

Cannabis Taxes in New Buffalo

Shoppers pay two taxes at the register: Michigan's 10% adult-use excise tax and the 6% state sales tax. Michigan has no local sales taxes, and we found no extra local cannabis tax in New Buffalo. A 24% wholesale marijuana tax has applied since January 1, 2026, but businesses pay it before products reach the shelf, so it is built into prices rather than added to your receipt. Michigan shares part of the excise with host communities, about $54,000 per licensed store in the March 2026 payout, which is why a township with this many stores collects an unusually large share. For comparison with Illinois prices, see our 2026 cannabis prices by state.

Medical Marijuana in New Buffalo

No New Buffalo store in our directory holds a medical license. Michigan patients with a CRA registry card can still shop here as adult-use customers if they are 21 or older. Patients who want medical pricing or are 18 to 20 should look at nearby cities with medical stores, such as Niles or Buchanan.
