Hemp is the other form of cannabis and normally contains less than .3% THC.  It is not possible to smoke hemp and get high.  It is cultivated solely for commercial and industrial use.  Hemp can be used to produce paper, textiles, plastics, nutritional foods, fuel (ethanol), and can even strengthen concrete.  Because of its strong fibers it can be used as strong and sturdy cordage.  Hemp can even be used for water and soil purification.  One potential application of hemp could be to clean leaked oil from the Gulf of Mexico. Commercial production of hemp in the West took off in the eighteenth century.  It was an important cash crop in the United States until the 1937 marijuana Tax Act, where it became illegal for political and economic illogical reasons.
