Montana medical marijuana activist are back in work mode to strengthen the medical marijuana law in the state. IR-124 is the recently approved petition that will put medical marijuana back on the ballot on the state. In order for the law to even get on the ballot and become a successful referendum there are a lot of obstacles that Minnesotans need to overcome.
IR-124 needs to signed by 15% of registered voters in at least 51 of the legislative districts in the state. The deadline to get these signature is September 30th which only gives a 3 month time frame to collect a tremendous amount of signatures.
This entire movement is being organized as a result of Senate Bill 423 which is essentially a repeal of the medical marijuana system in place in Montana, and will cause major restriction to medical marijuana patients in the state. Kate Cholewa, a member of the Montana Cannabis Industry Association, said, “We are moving forward on all fronts. Of course it could be the courts that just throw this law out completely. But we are also taking it to the people and one of the reasons why is because the people deserve to vote on it again.”
In addition to the petition the MCIA has filed an injunction on SB 423, and the case will be ruled on by Judge Jim Reynolds before the law takes effect on July 1st. Click here for Judge James Reynolds ruling!
