It was a close call in many ways and Americans held their breath waiting on ballot counts on who would become president, legalized same sex marriage and of course, legalized marijuana in the states that had amendments on their ballots. With great relief, and excitement, I can say that marijuana is legalized in both Colorado and Washington. I don’t mean just for medical use, I mean it is legalized for ANYONE to use. Loud screams! Yesterday was the most historic day since marijuana prohibition begin 75 years ago.
The Colorado vote was close with the initiative passing with a mere 54.6% of the vote. Once the initiative is signed into law, Colorado residents aged 21 and over can possess up to one ounce of marijuana. They will be able to buy it legally in state-licensed vendors. Smokers can also grow up to 6 plants.
In Washington, the initiative passed with 55.4% of the vote. The laws in Washington are pretty much the same, with adults 21 and over being able to buy and possess up to an ounce of marijuana. There is no mention about the legalized growing of plants so we have to wait and see on that.
The question remains as to whether or not the Obama administration will continue to play bully and force the crack down on legalized use. Some suspect that, now that he has been elected a second term, he will become more lax on the subject.
