Rhode Island has 9 licensed cannabis dispensaries in 8 cities and towns, all hybrid compassion centers licensed by the Rhode Island Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) to sell to both adults and registered medical patients. Anyone 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID can buy, and out-of-state visitors are welcome. Adults may buy and carry up to 1 ounce of cannabis. Purchases carry a 10% state cannabis excise tax, a 3% local cannabis excise tax and the 7% sales tax, 20% in all.
The list below shows every city and town in Rhode Island with a licensed store, grouped by the six retail zones set in state law. Each listing has the store's address, its CCC compassion center license number and a map. Rhode Island's stores sit close to the Massachusetts and Connecticut lines, so we also link to the Massachusetts dispensary directory and the Connecticut dispensary directory. Rhode Island Dispensaries by City and Town
Rhode Island has one of the smallest cannabis markets in the country. Just 9 stores serve the whole state, and 7 of the 8 places on the list have just one. Warwick, with 2 stores, is the only city with more than one. The license numbers run from MMPCC001 to MMPCC009, one for each compassion center, and every one of them holds a hybrid license, so each store has a medical side and an adult-use side under one roof. No Rhode Island city or town has enough stores for its own city page yet, so this page lists them all.
| City or town | Licensed stores | County | Retail zone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warwick | 2 | Kent | Zone 4 |
| Central Falls | 1 | Providence | Zone 2 |
| Exeter | 1 | Washington | Zone 5 |
| Foster | 1 | Providence | Zone 3 |
| Pawtucket | 1 | Providence | Zone 6 |
| Portsmouth | 1 | Newport | Zone 6 |
| Providence | 1 | Providence | Zone 2 |
| Woonsocket | 1 | Providence | Zone 1 |
Rhode Island Dispensaries by Retail Zone
The Rhode Island Cannabis Act splits the state into six geographic zones for retail licensing under R.I. Gen. Laws § 21-28.11-10.3. Every zone has at least one store today. By county, Providence County has 5 of the 9 stores, Kent County has 2, and Newport and Washington counties have one each. Bristol County, on the east side of Narragansett Bay, has none.
Zone 1: Northern Rhode Island (1 store)
Zone 1 covers Woonsocket and the towns of Burrillville, Cumberland, Glocester, North Smithfield and Smithfield. Its one store, Reef Wellness, is on Diamond Hill Road in Woonsocket, a city on the Massachusetts line in northern Rhode Island. Shoppers from Cumberland and the Blackstone Valley towns are a short drive away.
Zone 2: Providence and Its Northern Neighbors (2 stores)
Zone 2 takes in Providence, Central Falls, Johnston, Lincoln and North Providence. Providence, the capital, has one store, Thomas C. Slater Compassion Center, on Corliss Street on the city's north side. It holds license MMPCC001. Central Falls has Aura of Rhode Island on Lonsdale Avenue. With only 2 stores for the capital and its nearest suburbs, Providence shoppers can also try the stores in Pawtucket and Warwick.
Zone 3: Western Rhode Island (1 store)
Zone 3 covers the rural west: Coventry, Foster, Scituate, West Greenwich and West Warwick. Its one store, Green Wave CC, is on Danielson Pike in Foster, a town on the Connecticut line. It is the closest Rhode Island store for shoppers coming from eastern Connecticut, which has its own adult-use stores; see our Connecticut dispensary directory.
Zone 4: Warwick, Cranston and the Bay Towns (2 stores)
Zone 4 covers Warwick, Cranston, East Greenwich and North Kingstown. Warwick, home to the state's main airport, has 2 stores, the most of any place in Rhode Island: RISE Warwick and Solar Cannabis. One is on Quaker Lane and the other is on Meadow Street. Cranston has none.
Zone 5: South County (1 store)
Zone 5 covers Charlestown, Exeter, Hopkinton, Narragansett, Richmond, South Kingstown and Westerly, the area most Rhode Islanders call South County. Its one store, Sweetspot Dispensary, is on South County Trail in Exeter. Beach towns such as Narragansett and Westerly have no store, so summer visitors should plan on a drive inland.
Zone 6: East Bay, Newport and Pawtucket (2 stores)
Zone 6 is the largest zone by town count. It covers Pawtucket, East Providence, Newport, Barrington, Bristol, Jamestown, Little Compton, Middletown, New Shoreham, Portsmouth, Tiverton and Warren. Pawtucket has Mother Earth Wellness on Esten Avenue. Portsmouth, at the north end of Aquidneck Island, has Newport Cannabis on West Main Road. It is the only store on the island, so visitors to Newport and Middletown drive north to Portsmouth. Block Island, the town of New Shoreham, has no store.
Will Rhode Island Get More Dispensaries?
Yes, but not yet. Under § 21-28.11-10.2, the CCC may grant 24 new retail licenses in addition to the hybrid compassion centers, with no more than four in each of the six zones. In each zone, one license is reserved for a workers' cooperative and one for a social equity applicant.
The first round of applications closed in December 2025. In April 2026, a federal judge halted the licensing lottery in lawsuits over a rule that most owners had to be Rhode Island residents. The General Assembly then dropped the residency rule and voided that round. The CCC opened a new application process on August 7, 2026, the court lifted its order a week later, and applications are due by November 23, 2026. As of October 2026, no new licenses have been awarded and no new store has opened. We will add new stores to this directory as they open. Until then, the stores listed here are the only legal places to buy.
Buying Cannabis in Rhode Island: ID, Limits and Products
- Age and ID: You must be 21 or older for adult-use purchases. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Visitors from other states can use their own ID.
- 1-ounce limit: Under § 21-28.11-22, an adult may possess, use and buy from a licensed retailer 1 ounce or less of cannabis, or the equivalent amount in concentrate. The same limit applies to residents and visitors.
- At home: Adults may keep up to 10 ounces per resident at their primary residence, stored to meet the commission's security rules.
- Gifts: An adult may give up to 1 ounce to another adult 21 or older, as long as nothing is paid and the gift is not advertised.
- Medical and adult-use counters: State law asked hybrid stores to keep medical and adult-use products and sales areas separate where the building allows, and to keep a private space for patient consultations.

Medical Cannabis in Rhode Island
Rhode Island's medical program is older than its adult-use law and runs under chapter 21-28.6 of the general laws. The Rhode Island Department of Health issues the registry cards, while the CCC licenses the compassion centers. Every store in this directory is a compassion center, so registered patients can shop at any of them.
Under § 21-28.6-4, a registered patient may have up to 2.5 ounces of usable cannabis and grow up to 12 mature and 12 immature plants with valid plant tags. A medical card issued by another state, a U.S. territory or Washington, D.C., has the same force as a Rhode Island card. Patients visiting from out of state should call ahead to ask what the store needs to see. This page is not medical advice.
Cannabis Taxes in Rhode Island
Three taxes apply to every adult-use sale under § 21-28.11-13:
- 10% state cannabis excise tax: Charged on each retail sale. The money goes to a state fund for program costs, prevention, public health and law enforcement training.
- 3% local cannabis excise tax: Paid to the city or town where the cannabis is delivered.
- 7% sales tax: Rhode Island's regular sales tax under § 44-18-18.
Together that is 20%. The law has the retailer add the taxes to the sales price, so the total at the register will be higher than the shelf price. A $50 purchase comes to $60 with tax. To see how Rhode Island compares, read our guide to cannabis prices by state.
Where You Can Use What You Buy
- Not in public: Under § 21-28.11-22(e), smoking or vaping cannabis is banned in any public place where tobacco smoking or vaping is banned. Cities and towns may add their own limits, for example in parks and on beaches.
- Other banned places: § 21-28.11-29 also bars smoking or vaping on school buses and other public transportation, on school grounds, in correctional facilities and in licensed drug treatment facilities.
- Private property and rentals: Owners do not have to allow cannabis on their property. A landlord may ban smoking and vaping, but may not ban a tenant's legal use by other means, such as edibles.
- Driving: Driving under the influence of cannabis is a crime under § 31-27-2. The law sets no THC blood number, and having cannabis metabolites in your system does not by itself mean you are under the influence. Do not drive impaired.
- State lines and airports: Massachusetts and Connecticut both have legal stores, but carrying cannabis across any state line is illegal under federal law. That also goes for flights out of the airport in Warwick. Read our federal marijuana law guide and compare the rules next door in our state-by-state cannabis law guides.
Tips for Shopping at a Rhode Island Dispensary
- Expect a short list: With 9 stores in the state, the nearest one may be in the next city. From Providence, the other Zone 2 store and the stores in Pawtucket and Warwick are all within a short drive.
- Bring photo ID: Stores check it before you can shop.
- Say whether you are a patient: Hybrid stores serve patients and adult-use customers, so tell staff which you are when you arrive.
- Budget for 20% in taxes: The two excise taxes and the sales tax are added at checkout.
- Stay at 1 ounce: The purchase and carry limit are the same, so do not buy more than an ounce at a time.
- Call ahead: Hours, menus and deals change. Check before a long drive, especially to Foster or Exeter.

How we build this directory: Store names, addresses and license numbers come from the Rhode Island Cannabis Control Commission's list of licensed compassion centers. We check each store against map data and refresh the list as licenses change, and we will add new retail stores as they open, so our count can differ slightly from the state's. We assign each store to a county and a retail zone by its city or town. For the rules in every state, see our state-by-state cannabis law guides.
