Dispensaries in Phoenix

Phoenix has 44 dispensaries licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS). Any adult 21 or older with a valid photo ID can shop, and that includes visitors carrying an out-of-state driver license or a passport. Every one of the city's stores also holds a medical registration, so card holders can use any of them. Phoenix has more licensed stores than any other city in Arizona, about a quarter of the statewide total.

Phoenix is a chain town. Big multi-store brands such as Curaleaf, JARS, Trulieve, Mint, Story and Zen Leaf run most of the shops here, which means similar menus across town and hours that rarely vary: nearly every store opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m. What really separates them is location and reputation.

All 44 Licensed Dispensaries in Phoenix, AZ

The stores follow the city's big arterial roads rather than one district. West Phoenix has the largest group, ten stores between 24th Avenue and 83rd Avenue. Cave Creek Road in the northeast has four on its own, central Phoenix has a run of stores along Central Avenue and 7th Street, and the area around Sky Harbor airport has several more.

Near Sky Harbor and east-central Phoenix: JARS Cannabis Phoenix Airport on University Drive and Curaleaf Phoenix Airport on Monroe Street are the closest to the terminals. A little north are TruMed Dispensary on 40th Street, The Flower Shop on McDowell Road and YiLo Superstore Arcadia on Thomas Road. In the 85016 ZIP, JARS Cannabis Arcadia sits on 24th Street and Zen Leaf on East Indian School Road.

Central Avenue, 7th Street and downtown: Curaleaf Midtown is on Central Avenue, Curaleaf Camelback on Camelback Road, and two 7th Street stores, Story Midtown and Trulieve Roosevelt, are the nearest to downtown.

South Phoenix and Ahwatukee: Curaleaf Central Phoenix on South Central Avenue, JARS South Phoenix on Corona Avenue, Curaleaf 48th Street and PRC by Sunday Goods on South 35th Avenue. The Flower Shop Ahwatukee on 51st Street serves the far south of the city.

West Phoenix: Backpackboyz at 35th Avenue and Washington, Story McDowell, Nature's Wonder on Thomas Road, and two Indian School Road stores, Trulieve Alhambra and Herbal Wellness Center West. Farther out are The Superior Dispensary on 57th Drive, Mint 75th Ave, Nirvana Cannabis on 75th Avenue and Curaleaf Pavilions on 83rd Avenue. Key Cannabis is a little north on Dunlap Avenue.

North-central Phoenix: Story Dunlap, Sunday Goods on Glendale Avenue, Mint Northern, Trulieve North Mountain on Peoria Avenue, JARS Metrocenter, Zen Leaf West Dunlap, YiLo Superstore on Thunderbird Road and Curaleaf Bell on 19th Avenue.

Cave Creek Road and the northeast: Zen Leaf and JARS Cave Creek sit a block apart, with Mint Bell Road and Ponderosa farther up the road. Nearby are Herbal Wellness Center North on Deer Valley Road, Sol Flower 32nd and Shea and Trulieve Tatum.

Far north Phoenix: JARS North Phoenix on 27th Avenue, Nirvana North Phoenix on Union Hills Drive and Arizona Natural Concepts on the Carefree Highway, the northernmost store in the city.

Visiting a Dispensary in Phoenix: ID, Payment and Hours

  • ID: Staff check ID at the door. Arizona accepts the same documents it uses for alcohol: an unexpired driver license from any U.S. state, DC or Canada, a U.S. military ID or a valid passport. There is no residency rule.
  • Payment: Plan on cash or a debit card. Cannabis is still illegal federally, so most stores cannot run credit cards, and many keep an ATM in the lobby.
  • Hours: Phoenix stores keep very uniform hours, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. at almost every location.

Phoenix and Arizona Cannabis Laws: Purchase Limits, Public Use and Driving

Proposition 207, the Smart and Safe Arizona Act, sets the shopping rules statewide. A store can sell you up to 1 ounce in a single sale, of which no more than 5 grams can be concentrate, and adults can possess and carry the same amount. Holding more than an ounce but no more than 2.5 ounces is a petty offense rather than a crime.

  • Public use: Smoking in a public place or open space is a petty offense. That includes downtown sidewalks, Roosevelt Row, city parks and the trails at South Mountain and Camelback.
  • Hotels and rentals: Property owners, hotels included, may ban cannabis on their premises.
  • Sky Harbor: Airport screening follows federal law, and TSA refers cannabis it finds to local police. Taking it on a plane or across a state line is illegal.
  • Driving: No one in a moving vehicle may consume cannabis, driver or passenger. Driving impaired "to the slightest degree" is a DUI, though THC metabolites alone do not prove impairment.

Cannabis Taxes in Phoenix

Adult-use shoppers in Phoenix pay three layers. Arizona's 16% marijuana excise tax comes first. Then comes transaction privilege tax, the state's version of sales tax: 6.3% for the state and Maricopa County combined, plus Phoenix's own 2.8% city rate, according to the Arizona Department of Revenue rate table. That adds up to 25.1% on the pre-tax price. Registered patients skip the excise tax. Compare prices around the country in our cannabis prices by state report.

Medical Marijuana in Phoenix

44 of Phoenix's 44 stores serve patients, which is every store in the city. A card costs $150 from ADHS, or $75 with proof of SNAP benefits, and lets you buy up to 2.5 ounces every 14 days without the 16% excise tax. Patients from other states can possess their medicine here but must buy as adult-use customers.
