South Dakota has 54 licensed medical cannabis dispensaries in 28 cities and towns, all registered with the South Dakota Department of Health. South Dakota is a medical-only state, and there are no adult-use stores. To buy, you need a South Dakota registry card, as a patient or a designated caregiver, or a confirmed registration as a visiting patient with a valid card from home. A dispensary may sell a patient no more than 3 ounces of cannabis or cannabis products in any 14-day period.
Below is every storefront on the state's list, sorted by town and area, with the rules that apply at the counter. For possession penalties and the rest of the law, read our guide to South Dakota marijuana laws. To compare other states, start at the national dispensary directory.
South Dakota Dispensaries at a Glance
Voters approved medical cannabis with Initiated Measure 26 in 2020, and the program took effect July 1, 2021. The Department of Health counted 20,040 registered patients in September 2026.
The state's establishments list, as we pulled it on October 19, 2026, shows 62 dispensary registrations. That is more than the 54 stores in our directory. Some businesses hold several registrations at one address, so we list each storefront once. The biggest case is Rapid City, where the state lists ten dispensaries and we count four storefronts.
The list covers stores registered with the state. A store run under a tribal program on tribal land is not on it, and this page does not cover tribal rules.
Sioux Falls and Yankton have the most stores, at five each. Aberdeen, North Sioux City and Rapid City have four each. Most towns on the list, 17 of 28, have a single store.

South Dakota Dispensaries by Area
The Missouri River splits South Dakota into what residents call East River and West River. West of the river there are 15 stores, and east of it there are 39. We group the towns into five areas below.
Black Hills and Rapid City (12 stores)
Rapid City has four storefronts: CC Health, Genesis Farms Rapid City East North Street, Genesis Farms Rapid City North Plaza and Puffy's Rapid City. Several Genesis Farms and Puffy's registrations here share an address. Next door, Box Elder has Dakota Green Dispensary.
In the northern Hills, Spearfish has Genesis Farms Spearfish, and Sturgis has Northern Hills Alternative Health and Puffy's Sturgis. Deadwood has Trails Head Cannabis Company, and Belle Fourche has Redwater Cannabis Care. In the southern Hills, Custer has The Broken Boot Dispensary and Hot Springs has Dakota Kind.
Central: Pierre, Mitchell and Chamberlain (8 stores)
Pierre, the state capital, has Genesis Farms Pierre. Across the Missouri River, Fort Pierre has Bad River Cannabis and Yellowstone Cannabis Care. Chamberlain has King of ReLeaf, and Colome, to the south, has Five Leaf Clover 4.20. Mitchell has three stores: Genesis Farms Mitchell, Superior Buds and The Flower Shop Mitchell.
Sioux Falls Area (9 stores)
Sioux Falls is the state's largest city and has five stores: Canna-Care, East River Farms, Genesis Farms Sioux Falls, Royzzz Sioux Falls and The Flower Shop Sioux Falls. Nearby towns add more. Brandon has Dakota Herb Brandon, Harrisburg has The Dispensary, Hartford has Unity Road and Tea has Pure Bliss Dispensary. That makes nine stores in the area.
Southeast: Yankton, Vermillion and North Sioux City (12 stores)
Yankton has as many stores as Sioux Falls, with five: Elevate Cannabis Dispensary, Genesis Farms Yankton, Groovy Treez, Happy Flower Healing and Royzzz Yankton. North Sioux City, across the Big Sioux River from Sioux City, Iowa, has four: Dakota Health and Wellness, Kind Care of South Dakota, Royzzz North Sioux City and True North Dispensary. Vermillion has Dakota Herb Vermillion. To the west, Wagner has Ruthie's and Lake Andes has Indigenous Budz.
Northeast: Aberdeen, Watertown, Brookings and Huron (13 stores)
Aberdeen has four stores: Dakota Herb Aberdeen, Genesis Farms Aberdeen, Terp City and The Flower Shop Aberdeen. Watertown has three: Dispensary of Watertown, Genesis Farms Watertown and Royzzz Watertown. Huron also has three: Cannabis Connection, Dakota Herb Huron and Genesis Farms Huron. Brookings has Genesis Farms Brookings and The Flower Shop Brookings. Big Stone City, on the Minnesota line, has Mac's From the Hills.
Names on the Sign
Our 54 South Dakota stores trade under 34 names. Genesis Farms is the largest, with eleven stores in ten towns, and the state lists 16 Genesis Farms registrations. The Flower Shop has four stores, in Aberdeen, Brookings, Mitchell and Sioux Falls. Dakota Herb also has four, in Aberdeen, Brandon, Huron and Vermillion. Royzzz has four, in North Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Watertown and Yankton. Puffy's has two, in Rapid City and Sturgis. The other 29 names each appear on one store.
The state list sometimes shows a company name that differs from the sign. It lists Dakota Green Dispensary in Box Elder and Yellowstone Cannabis Care in Fort Pierre under the same company, BHCC LLC.
Who Can Buy at a South Dakota Dispensary
- Registered patients: You need a registry card from the Department of Health Medical Cannabis Program. You apply with a written certification from a physician, physician assistant or advanced practice registered nurse, issued within 90 days before you apply, under SDCL 34-20G-29.
- Fees and renewal: A standard card costs $75, or $20 for patients with household income below 130% of the federal poverty level. A card lasts no more than one year, so plan to renew every year.
- Patients under 18: A parent or legal guardian must consent in writing and serve as the patient's designated caregiver, under SDCL 34-20G-33.
- Designated caregivers: Caregivers must be at least 21 and may assist up to five patients in most cases. A caregiver's purchases for a patient count toward that patient's limit.
- Visiting patients: South Dakota recognizes medical cards from other states. A visitor with a valid card from home must register with the Department of Health and receive confirmation before buying. The same rule covers people who have lived in South Dakota for fewer than 45 days. Visiting patients may buy and possess up to 3 ounces under SDCL 34-20G-3, but may not grow.
- No adult-use sales: Without a card, possessing 2 ounces or less is a Class 1 misdemeanor, with up to 1 year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
At the Counter: Limits and Rules
| At the counter | The rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase limit | No more than 3 ounces of cannabis or cannabis products in any 14-day period, bought directly or through a caregiver | SDCL 34-20G-70 |
| Checks before a sale | A valid card or registration, a photo ID issued by a state, a tribe or the federal government, and a check of the state tracking system | SDCL 34-20G-70 |
| Possession limit | 3 ounces of cannabis, plus cannabis products in amounts the Department of Health sets by rule | SDCL 34-20G-1 |
| Home grow | Only with a card that allows cultivation: 2 flowering and 2 non-flowering plants, for a $20 add-on fee | SDCL 34-20G-1 |
| Store locations | No new dispensary within 1,000 feet of a school that existed before it applied | SDCL 34-20G-55 |
| Local rules | Cities and counties may limit the number of stores and set time, place and manner rules, but may not ban dispensaries | SDCL 34-20G-58 and 34-20G-59 |
The 14-day limit follows the patient, not the store. The tracking system shows what you bought at every dispensary, so a sale that would put you over the limit will be declined. This page is general information, not medical or legal advice.
Where Patients Can Use It
- Not in public: The card does not cover smoking or vaping in a public place, a place open to the public or on public transportation, under SDCL 34-20G-18. Cardholders under 21 may not smoke or vape at all.
- Not at the store: Using cannabis on the property of a licensed cannabis business is prohibited.
- Not behind the wheel: Driving under the influence of marijuana is a DUI under SDCL 32-23-1. The law sets no THC blood limit, so a charge rests on evidence of impairment.
Crossing the State Line
North Dakota and Iowa are medical-only states. Minnesota and Montana have licensed stores that sell to adults 21 and older. Carrying cannabis across a state line breaks federal law.
South Dakota adds a risk of its own. Under SDCL 22-42-15, ingesting a substance to become intoxicated is a Class 1 misdemeanor, and it can be charged where the substance is detected in the body. A visitor who used cannabis legally in another state can face a charge in South Dakota after a positive test.
To compare stores next door, see our North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Montana dispensary directories. For Nebraska and Wyoming, read our Nebraska marijuana law guide and Wyoming marijuana law guide. Our federal marijuana law guide explains the federal side.
Before You Visit a South Dakota Dispensary
- Bring your card and ID: Staff must check both before every sale.
- Call first: The state list has no phone numbers or hours, and only 21 of our listings have a phone number so far. Check the store's own website or map listing.
- Track your 14 days: Keep a note of what you bought and when, even if you split purchases between stores.

How we build this directory: Store names and towns come from the South Dakota Department of Health medical cannabis establishments list, which we pulled on October 19, 2026. The page said it was last updated August 27, 2026. The list gives each dispensary's company name, business name and town only. It has no street addresses, phone numbers or license numbers, so our South Dakota listings do not show license numbers. We found each street address by matching the store's name and town in Google Maps. When a business held more than one registration at the same storefront address, we merged them into one listing. We merged eight registrations this way, so the state's 62 dispensary registrations make 54 storefronts here. One store, Canna-Care in Sioux Falls, has no confirmed street address yet. We name stores by brand and add the town where a brand has several stores. We recheck the list and update stores as they open and close. For the rules in every state, see our state-by-state cannabis law guides.
