Maine has 514 licensed and registered cannabis stores in our directory, spread across 139 cities, towns and villages. All of them answer to the Office of Cannabis Policy (OCP). The list mixes three kinds of store: 184 adult-use stores that sell to anyone 21 or older with photo ID, 89 registered medical dispensaries, and 241 retail storefronts run by registered medical caregivers. The last two groups sell to certified medical patients. An adult can buy up to 2.5 ounces at a time, Maine residency is not required, and adult-use sales carry a 14% sales tax.
Choose a town below to see each store there, with its address, state license or registration number and a map. The busiest places are Portland (40), Lewiston (26), Bangor (24), Auburn (22), South Portland (21), Waterville (14), Augusta (13), Biddeford (12), Sanford (11), Oxford (9), Lebanon (8) and Windham (8). Maine Dispensaries by City and Town
This table lists every Maine place with at least one store, sorted by store count. Portland leads with 40, and the Lewiston and Auburn pair together have 48, more than Portland alone. Past the dozen biggest places the counts fall off fast: 127 of the 139 places have fewer than 8 stores, and 55 have a single one. Only the 12 places with 8 or more stores link to their own city pages. The medical column counts dispensaries and caregiver storefronts. Place names follow the address in the state's records, so some are villages inside a larger town. Hollis Center is part of Hollis, Lisbon Falls is part of Lisbon, South China is part of China, Bryant Pond is part of Woodstock, North Anson is part of Anson, Shirley Mills is part of Shirley, Greenville Junction is part of Greenville and South Paris is part of Paris.

Adult-Use Stores, Dispensaries and Caregivers: What the License Number Tells You
Maine runs two cannabis programs side by side, and OCP, a unit of the Department of Administrative and Financial Services, oversees both. Adult-use stores operate under the Cannabis Legalization Act, Title 28-B of the Maine Revised Statutes. Medical dispensaries and caregivers operate under the Maine Medical Use of Cannabis Act, Title 22, chapter 558-C. The letters at the start of the number on each listing show which program a store belongs to.
- AMS, adult-use cannabis store: 184 listings. Any adult 21 or older with a valid government photo ID can shop here. Under 28-B MRSA §402, a store may operate only in a town whose legislative body has voted to allow that type of cannabis business, and a town that never votes has not said yes. That opt-in rule is why 64 of the 139 places on our list have an adult-use store and the rest do not.
- DSP, registered medical dispensary: 89 listings. Dispensaries belong to the medical program and sell to patients who hold a provider's certification.
- CGR, caregiver retail store: 241 listings. A registered caregiver grows cannabis for qualifying patients. Under 22 MRSA §2423-A, a caregiver may operate one caregiver retail store to sell harvested cannabis to qualifying patients, and may transfer up to 2.5 ounces of harvested cannabis to a patient in one transaction.
Caregiver storefronts are the largest group in our Maine listings, 241 of 514. In 58 of the 139 places, every store we list is a caregiver storefront, so a patient in a small town may have a local option where an adult-use shopper has none. Ten adult-use stores share a name and town with an active medical dispensary registration, so we show them with a Medical badge too. In all, 340 listings carry that badge. 7 listings show two numbers because the state lists the same business under two registrations.
Some names repeat across towns. Marijuanaville, for example, appears 11 times in our Maine listings, as a mix of dispensary and caregiver registrations. To confirm a store is active, compare its number with the license data published on OCP's website.
Maine Dispensaries by County
Every one of Maine's 16 counties has at least one store on our list. The southern coast holds the biggest share: Cumberland County has 90 stores, about 18% of the state total, and Cumberland and York together have 169, about 33%. The state's medical dispensary records do not carry a county, so we assign one from the town.
Cumberland County (90 stores)
Portland has 40 stores, 27 of them adult-use, the most of any Maine town. South Portland, across the Fore River, has 21, and Windham has 8, five of them caregivers. Brunswick has 7 and Bridgton 5. Casco, Gray and Scarborough have two each; Standish, Yarmouth and Raymond have one.
York County (79 stores)
Biddeford has 12 and Sanford 11. Saco has 6 and no adult-use store: five dispensaries and one caregiver. On the New Hampshire line, Lebanon has 8, Eliot and Kittery 7 each, Berwick 5 and South Berwick 3. Limerick's 5 are all caregivers. Hollis Center has 4; Parsonsfield, Wells and Buxton have two each; Old Orchard Beach, York, Alfred, Cornish and North Berwick have one. New Hampshire has no legal adult-use sales; see our New Hampshire marijuana law guide.
Androscoggin County (71 stores)
Across the Androscoggin River from each other, Lewiston has 26 and Auburn 22. Auburn's 11 medical dispensaries are the most in any town, and the county's 26 lead all counties. Turner has 7, Livermore Falls 5 (all caregivers), Lisbon 3 plus one in Lisbon Falls, Mechanic Falls 3 and Greene 3 dispensaries. Poland has one.
Kennebec County (57 stores)
Waterville has 14 and Winslow, across the Kennebec, 5. Augusta, the capital, has 13. Manchester and Gardiner have 5 each, Hallowell 4, Chelsea 3, Rome and South China two each. China, Winthrop, West Gardiner and Readfield have one.
Penobscot County (52 stores)
Bangor has 24, and its 12 caregiver storefronts are the most in Maine. Brewer's 3 are all adult-use. Newport has 6, the town of Lincoln 4, Kenduskeag 3, Orono and Dexter two each. Medway, Hampden, Howland, Corinth, Old Town, Enfield, Indian Purchase Township and Millinocket have one.
Oxford County (35 stores)
The town of Oxford has 9. Bethel has 7, and Newry, home of Sunday River, has 2 adult-use stores. Fryeburg has 5, Rumford 3, Mexico and West Paris two each; Peru, Bryant Pond, Buckfield, South Paris and Dixfield have one.
Somerset County (19 stores)
Caregivers run 14 of these. Madison's 4 are all caregivers. Fairfield has 3: two dispensaries and an adult-use store that also serves patients. Detroit has 3; Solon, Norridgewock, Skowhegan, North Anson, New Portland, Smithfield, Bingham, Jackman and Rockwood have one.
Aroostook County (16 stores)
The only adult-use store is in Presque Isle, which has 4 in all. Houlton's 4 are all caregivers, Caribou's 2 are dispensaries, and Grand Isle has 2. Fort Kent, Madawaska, Amity and Hammond have one. Houlton, Fort Kent and Madawaska have crossings into New Brunswick; taking cannabis over the border either way is illegal.
Lincoln County (15 stores)
Damariscotta has 4 and Jefferson 3. Somerville, Wiscasset and Waldoboro have two each, and Boothbay and Dresden have one.
Washington County (15 stores)
Columbia has 4, Machias and Baring Plantation 3 each, and Calais, on the New Brunswick border, 2. Steuben, Lubec and Eastport have one caregiver each.

Piscataquis County (6 stores)
The fewest of any county: Milo has 3, and Guilford, Greenville Junction and Shirley Mills have one each.
Buying Cannabis in Maine: Age, ID and Limits
- Age and ID: Adult-use stores sell only to people 21 or older, and they check a valid government photo ID.
- Visitors welcome: Maine has no residency rule for adult-use purchases, so a tourist buys on the same terms as a resident.
- How much: Under 28-B MRSA §1501, an adult may buy, possess or transport up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis, or 2.5 ounces of a mix of cannabis and concentrate that includes no more than 10 grams of concentrate.
- Plants and seedlings: The same section lets an adult buy up to 12 immature plants or seedlings from a licensed store or nursery.
- Gifts: An adult may give up to 2.5 ounces to another adult 21 or older with no payment. A "donation" or any other indirect payment counts as payment, so a "free with purchase" deal is not a protected gift.
- Under 21: Without a medical certification, possession by someone under 21 is a civil violation under 22 MRSA §2383, with a mandatory fine of $350 to $600 for up to 1.25 ounces and $700 to $1,000 for more, up to 2.5 ounces.
| Rule | Adult use (21+) | Certified medical patients |
|---|---|---|
| Where to buy | AMS adult-use stores | Medical dispensaries, caregiver storefronts and adult-use stores that also serve patients |
| Amount | 2.5 oz, no more than 10 g of it concentrate | A caregiver may transfer up to 2.5 oz per transaction; patients may possess up to 8 lb of harvested cannabis |
| Age | 21 or older | Younger patients may qualify with a provider certification |
| Sales tax | 14% | Not charged the 14% adult-use rate |
| Home grow | 6 mature plants, 12 immature plants, unlimited seedlings per adult | Same plant counts, grown by the patient or a caregiver |
Penalties, driving rules and recent changes are all covered in our guide to Maine marijuana laws.
Medical Cannabis in Maine: Caregivers and Dispensaries
Maine's medical program has no fixed list of qualifying conditions. Under 22 MRSA §2423-B, a licensed physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner may issue a written certification after a full assessment, as part of a bona fide provider-patient relationship. OCP walks through the steps on its certification process page.
A certified patient can buy from a registered dispensary, from a caregiver, or from one of the adult-use stores that also serve patients. 340 listings in our directory carry a Medical badge. Under 22 MRSA §2423-A, a patient may possess up to 8 pounds of harvested cannabis and may grow, or have a caregiver grow, up to 6 mature plants, 12 immature plants and unlimited seedlings. A 2026 law, LD 1840, spells out where caregivers may sell, furnish or transport cannabis, including on property they own, lease or rent, according to the Legislature's summary of the law.
Visiting patients: Maine honors medical certifications from the out-of-state programs on its recognized list, shown with the patient's home-state ID. Under 22 MRSA §2423-D, a visiting patient may not grow cannabis, may not have more than 2.5 ounces of harvested cannabis in a 15-day period, and may not give cannabis to anyone else. This page is general information, not medical advice. Ask a health care provider whether cannabis is right for you.
Growing Cannabis at Home in Maine
An adult 21 or older may grow up to 6 mature plants, 12 immature plants and an unlimited number of seedlings, and keep all the cannabis those plants produce at the home or grow site, under 28-B MRSA §1501. That harvest may exceed the 2.5-ounce limit as long as it stays where it was grown. The rules in 28-B MRSA §1502 allow growing where you live, on land you own, or on someone else's land with the owner's written permission. Plants must not be visible from a public way without binoculars or aircraft, people under 21 must be kept away from them, and each plant needs a tag with the grower's name, driver's license or ID number and a note that it is grown for personal adult use. You may give some of your harvest to another adult within the 2.5-ounce gift limit, but selling it takes a license.
Maine Cannabis Taxes and Prices
- 14% sales tax: Since January 1, 2026, adult-use cannabis and cannabis products are taxed at 14%, up from 10%, under 36 MRSA §1811. The change came in the 2025 supplemental budget, P.L. 2025, c. 388.
- Cultivation excise tax: Growers pay an excise tax that shows up in shelf prices, not on your receipt. Under 36 MRSA §4923, it fell on the same date to $223 per pound of flower, $63 per pound of trim and $23 per mature plant.
- Medical sales: The 14% rate applies to medical cannabis only when it is sold to someone who is not a qualifying patient. Certified patients buying for medical use do not pay it.
Shelf tags may leave out the 14% tax, so compare final prices at the register.
Where You Can and Cannot Use Cannabis in Maine
- Private property only: Under §1501, adults may consume cannabis in a private residence, including its yard, or on private property that is not generally open to the public when the owner has explicitly allowed it.
- Banned places: Consumption is banned in a vehicle on a public way, for the driver and every passenger, in a home used as a day care or babysitting service while it is operating, and, for smoking, in workplace smoking areas and anywhere tobacco smoking is banned. A violation is a civil violation with a fine of up to $100.
- No lounges: Maine has no licensed consumption lounges. A bill to allow them, LD 1365, died on April 6, 2026.
- Driving: Operating under the influence of drugs, cannabis included, is the crime of OUI under 29-A MRSA §2411.
- Federal land and airports: Acadia National Park and other federal property follow federal law. Since April 2026, marijuana held under a state medical license is in Schedule III, but adult-use cannabis is still Schedule I; our federal marijuana law guide explains the difference. The TSA refers cannabis found at screening to police, including at the Portland and Bangor airports.
- State and national borders: Massachusetts and Vermont both allow adult-use sales, while New Hampshire does not, and crossing any state line with cannabis is a federal crime. Read our Massachusetts and Vermont guides, or compare cannabis laws in every state.
Before You Visit a Maine Dispensary
- Match the store to your status: Without a medical certification, look for an AMS number. Dispensaries and caregiver storefronts sell to certified patients.
- Bring the right papers: Photo ID for adult use; your certification and ID for a medical purchase. Visiting patients also need their home-state ID.
- Call ahead in rural towns: Confirm hours and stock by phone or on the store's site before a long drive, since the next store may be several towns away.
- Leave it closed in the car: No one in a vehicle on a public way may consume cannabis, passengers included.

How we build this directory: Store names, addresses and numbers come from OCP's lists of active adult-use stores and registered medical dispensaries, and from its registry of medical caregivers who report a retail storefront town, as of September 2026. We include caregivers that also report a business name. We check each store against map data and refresh the list as licenses change, so our count can differ from the state's. Counties come from the state's records, filled in from the town where a record has none. For the rules in every state, see our state-by-state cannabis law guides.
