Dispensaries in Bangor

Bangor has 24 dispensaries licensed by the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy (OCP). Nine are adult-use stores open to anyone 21 or older with a valid photo ID, visitors included. The other 15 serve certified medical patients, and Bangor has more caregiver storefronts than any other Maine town. One timing tip: every adult-use store in Bangor closes by 8 p.m., so evening shoppers should plan ahead.

Bangor is the shopping hub for a huge piece of Maine. People drive in from Down East, the Katahdin region and the Moosehead area to shop, and the cannabis stores sit where the other big stores are: near the Bangor Mall, along Stillwater Avenue and on Hammond Street. The city came to adult-use sales cautiously. It put a moratorium on marijuana businesses in place on November 8, 2016, the day Maine voted to legalize, and its zoning now allows stores only in certain commercial districts, with setbacks from uses such as schools and churches.

An adult may buy and carry up to 2.5 ounces, with no more than 10 grams of concentrate. Use is legal in a private residence and its yard, or on private property not open to the public where the owner allows it. The Bangor Waterfront, city parks and downtown streets are public, and public use is a civil violation with a fine of up to $100. Nobody in a vehicle on a public way may consume cannabis, and driving impaired is OUI, a real risk on the long drives home from Bangor. Maine has no licensed consumption lounges. See our Maine marijuana laws guide for details.

Heading out of town? Acadia National Park is federal land, where cannabis is illegal. The TSA refers cannabis found at screening to police, including at Bangor International Airport. Taking cannabis into Canada at Houlton or Calais, or into New Hampshire, is illegal either way.

Cannabis Taxes in Bangor

Adult-use purchases carry Maine's 14% sales tax, raised from 10% on January 1, 2026. The state's cultivation excise is paid by growers and built into shelf prices. We found no separate Bangor cannabis tax; your receipt shows what you paid. Certified patients buying for medical use do not pay the 14%.
