Where Blueberry Kush Comes From

Blueberry Kush combines two of the most important strains in American cannabis: Blueberry, the berry-scented indica from breeder DJ Short, and the clone-only OG Kush. SeedFinder, Leafly and AllBud all agree on that cross, and SeedFinder specifies an F2 of DJ Short’s Blueberry as the mother side. SeedFinder and several dispensary listings say the strain originated in Oregon, which fits DJ Short’s own Oregon roots, but the person who made the cross has never been publicly named. SeedFinder files it under unknown or legendary breeders.

Some retailers attach a Barney’s Farm name to a seed strain called Blueberry OG, but that appears to be a separate release rather than the original cut. AllBud notes Blueberry Kush is popular up and down the West Coast, from Southern California to British Columbia, and Leafly lists Zooted Blueberries and Saskatoon Berry among its descendants.

Blueberry Kush Effects: What It Feels Like

Leafly reviewers most often report feeling sleepy, relaxed and hungry, and others mention giggly, euphoric and happy moments early on. Leafly and SeedFinder both describe a potent indica whose heavy body feeling comes on slowly, which makes it a common pick for evenings or the hour before bed.

That slow onset is the main thing to respect. People who take a second hit too early sometimes report paranoia, a racing heart or feeling overwhelmed. Give it 15 minutes or so before deciding you need more, and plan to stay in.

Blueberry Kush Terpenes, Aroma and Flavor

Blueberry is the headline. Leafly lists blueberry, berry and sweet flavors, and AllBud adds earthy, fruity and kush aromas, with reviewers mentioning candy, mint and floral notes. SeedFinder describes a fresh berry scent with earthy, herbal undertones from the OG Kush side.

Leafly lists myrcene as the dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and pinene. Myrcene gives the ripe, earthy base, caryophyllene adds a light pepper, and pinene a hint of pine.

  • Myrcene: earthy, musky and herbal, also found in mango and hops
  • Beta-caryophyllene: peppery and spicy, also found in black pepper and cloves
  • Pinene: fresh pine, also found in pine needles and rosemary

Terpene levels vary from grower to grower and batch to batch, so check the lab label on the package. Learn more in our guide to cannabis terpenes.

Side Effects and How to Use Blueberry Kush

Dry mouth and dry eyes are the most common complaints on both Leafly and AllBud, with headaches and dizziness reported less often. A few Leafly reviewers describe paranoia or greening out after taking too much, so dose carefully and wait out the slow onset.

With Blueberry Kush, as with any strain, a smaller dose usually avoids anxiety or grogginess. Our cannabis safety guide covers what to do if you take too much.

Do People Use Blueberry Kush for Medical Reasons?

Leafly reviewers most often say they reach for Blueberry Kush for stress, anxiety and pain, and Leafly notes many people use it for insomnia. AllBud reviewers also mention arthritis and muscle spasms. These are self-reports, not clinical evidence.

Growing Blueberry Kush

  • Flowering: About 8 weeks (56 days)
  • Environment: Indoor or outdoor

SeedFinder lists a flowering time of about 56 days indoors or out and notes the strain was never released as feminized seed, so most growers work from clones or from similar Blueberry x OG crosses sold under the same name. Leafly and AllBud do not publish yield or height figures. As with any dense indica, keep airflow strong late in flower, especially in a wet Pacific Northwest autumn.

Home-grow rules depend on the state: adults can grow at home in states such as California (six plants per residence), Michigan (12 per residence) and Oregon (four per household), while Washington and Illinois allow home growing only for registered medical patients. Check your state in our cannabis laws by state guide before you plant anything.
