Where Blueberry Comes From

Blueberry is one of the most influential strains in the story of Pacific Northwest cannabis. It was bred by DJ Short, a breeder from Eugene, Oregon. His son JD Short told Willamette Week that DJ started with four lines, Thai, Chocolate Thai, Afghan and Oaxacan, and that the Blueberry phenotype dates to around 1979.

The exact recipe is told differently. The most common retail version has an Afghani male crossed with two Thai females, Highland Thai (sometimes called Juicy Fruit) and Purple Thai. One account describes two steps: Afghani with Purple Thai first, and the result crossed with Highland Thai. The order is not settled.

Blueberry went on to become the parent of many strains, including Blue Dream, Skywalker and Blueberry Headband. Names such as DJ Short Blueberry or the Blueberry DJ Cut point to the original line, while other Blueberries on menus may be different crosses.

Blueberry Effects: What It Feels Like

Blueberry is mellow. A wave of calm and gentle happiness arrives first, then the body softens and the mind slows to an easy pace. It is a good fit for evening television, music, a book or a walk at dusk.

As the dose goes up, the sedation deepens, and many users find it sleepy. The high is not strongly racy, so it is often recommended for relaxation without a push of intensity. Beginners should still start small.

Blueberry Terpenes, Aroma and Flavor

True to the name, the aroma is ripe blueberry, with sweet fruit, earth and a faint herbal edge. Some cuts add a purple, jammy note.

The smoke tastes of sweet berry on the inhale and a soft, earthy exhale. Myrcene leads in most reports, with pinene and caryophyllene adding lift and spice.

  • Myrcene: earthy, musky and herbal, also found in mango and hops
  • Pinene: fresh pine, also found in pine needles and rosemary
  • Beta-caryophyllene: peppery and spicy, also found in black pepper and cloves

Terpene levels vary from grower to grower and batch to batch, so check the lab label on the package. Learn more in our guide to cannabis terpenes.

Side Effects and How to Use Blueberry

Dry mouth and dry eyes are the most common. Drowsiness, dizziness and a heavy feeling are likely at larger doses, so avoid driving or work afterward. A few users feel mild anxiety if they take too much.

With Blueberry, as with any strain, a smaller dose usually avoids anxiety or grogginess. Our cannabis safety guide covers what to do if you take too much.

Growing Blueberry

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Flowering: 8–9 weeks
  • Yield: Medium
  • Height: Short to medium
  • Environment: Indoor or warm outdoor

Blueberry is described as a compact to medium plant with dense flowers that can take on purple tones in cool nights. Because of the tight buds, humidity and airflow are the main concerns, and in wet Pacific Northwest autumns it is better in a greenhouse or an indoor run. Flowering is typically 8 to 9 weeks. Yields are fair rather than huge.

Home-grow rules depend on the state: adults can grow at home in states such as California (six plants per residence), Michigan (12 per residence) and Oregon (four per household), while Washington and Illinois allow home growing only for registered medical patients. Check your state in our cannabis laws by state guide before you plant anything.
