Driving Up From California? What Changes at the State Line

California is a legal state too, so many visitors assume they can shop in Medford and drive home with their purchase. They can't. Crossing the Oregon and California border with cannabis is transporting it across a state line, which federal law prohibits regardless of either state's rules. Buy what you will use in Oregon and finish it here.

Inside the store, a California license works like any other ID. The daily limit is set by Oregon, not California: up to 2 ounces of flower, 10 grams of concentrates, 16 ounces of edibles and 72 fluid ounces of liquids per person, per day (Oregon purchase limits explained). A California medical card does not qualify for Oregon's medical tax exemption; only Oregon OMMP cards do. Our guide for California visitors buying weed in Medford covers the trip in more detail, and can tourists buy weed in Medford answers the basics for everyone else.

Rogue Valley Flower and What You Pay in Medford

Long, dry summers make the Rogue Valley one of Oregon's main outdoor growing regions, and many Medford shelves carry sun-grown flower from nearby farms. Ask the budtender what was grown locally; it is often on special, and Oregon prices are already low because the state licensed more growers than it needed.

At the register, the City of Medford adds a 3% tax on recreational cannabis (Medford Municipal Code 8.3105) to Oregon's 17%, so the total is about 20%. OMMP cardholders pay no cannabis tax, and Oregon has no sales tax on top.

  • Payment: Plan on cash or debit; most stores have an ATM. Credit cards rarely work at Oregon dispensaries.
  • Hours: Oregon allows sales from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and each Medford shop sets its own schedule inside that range.

Crater Lake, the Rogue and Other Places Cannabis Stays Illegal

Crater Lake National Park and the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest are federal land, where cannabis is illegal under federal law. In town, using it anywhere open to the public, from Bear Creek Park to a hotel parking lot, is a Class B violation with a presumptive $265 fine. Most Medford hotels ban smoking; see smoking weed in Medford hotels and where you can smoke in Medford. And if you are driving on to Crater Lake or back down I-5, remember Oregon has no THC blood limit: officers judge impairment, and a cannabis DUII is charged like any other.

Strains Common in Medford

Menus change with each harvest. You will often find White Runtz, Strawberry Cough, Gelato Cookies, Platinum Sour Diesel, Lemon Cake and Zkittlez Cake. Our guides to choosing a strain, sativa versus indica and terpenes explain the differences.
