Where Cherry Pie Comes From

Most sources agree on Cherry Pie’s parentage: Granddaddy Purple crossed with Durban Poison, with one account specifying an F1 Durban Poison. Granddaddy Purple brings the grape, purple color and heavy body, and Durban Poison brings the clear-headed, energetic side.

The breeder is commonly given as Pieguy of the Cookie Fam in San Francisco, with the cut later grown by Jigga at Cookies Family. These are repeated by secondary and retail sites, and I could not find a primary breeder record, so treat it as the common account. Some guides are vaguer and simply say California breeders made the cross.

Cherry Pie has been a parent in newer crosses, and some sources link it to Forbidden Fruit and Wedding Cake, though that is not firmly documented. Several different strains also carry cherry names, such as Cherry Pie Kush and Cherry Kush, with their own parentage, so check the label.

Cherry Pie Effects: What It Feels Like

Cherry Pie begins with a gentle lift in mood and a bit of mental brightness from the Durban side. As it settles, the body relaxes, shoulders drop and the day slows down without turning heavy. The high is smooth and cheerful, and it works for casual time with friends or a quiet evening.

At higher doses the Granddaddy Purple side takes over and drowsiness shows up. Most people find it easiest to use from late afternoon onward, and a small dose is plenty for newer users.

Cherry Pie Terpenes, Aroma and Flavor

The nose is sweet and tart cherry, with a doughy, earthy, slightly berry undertone and a bit of pine from the Durban Poison side.

On the inhale the flavor is cherry-forward and sweet, and the exhale adds earthy spice. Myrcene, caryophyllene and limonene are the usual terpene leaders, though the mix varies by cut and grower.

  • Myrcene: earthy, musky and herbal, also found in mango and hops
  • Beta-caryophyllene: peppery and spicy, also found in black pepper and cloves
  • Limonene: bright citrus, also found in lemon and orange peel

Terpene levels vary from grower to grower and batch to batch, so check the lab label on the package. Learn more in our guide to cannabis terpenes.

Side Effects and How to Use Cherry Pie

Dry mouth and dry eyes are the usual complaints. Larger amounts may bring drowsiness, dizziness or lingering fatigue, and a few people feel anxious. Start with a small dose and avoid driving.

With Cherry Pie, as with any strain, a smaller dose usually avoids anxiety or grogginess. Our cannabis safety guide covers what to do if you take too much.

Do People Use Cherry Pie for Medical Reasons?

People commonly say they reach for Cherry Pie when stressed or tense, or to unwind in the evening. Some mention it for mild aches. These are user reports, not medical claims.

Growing Cherry Pie

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Flowering: 8–9 weeks
  • Yield: Medium to high
  • Height: Medium
  • Environment: Indoor or mild outdoor

Cherry Pie is described as a manageable plant with medium height and dense, colorful flowers. The GDP side makes buds tight, so airflow and humidity control matter, especially in wet Pacific Northwest autumns where mold can set in. Flowering around 8 to 9 weeks is typical. Cooler nights late in flower can bring out purple tones.

Home-grow rules depend on the state: adults can grow at home in states such as California (six plants per residence), Michigan (12 per residence) and Oregon (four per household), while Washington and Illinois allow home growing only for registered medical patients. Check your state in our cannabis laws by state guide before you plant anything.
