Vancouver shoppers live with a legal market on both sides of the Columbia, which raises questions nobody in Spokane or Bellingham has to ask. Is Portland cheaper? Who stays open later? Can I drive home over the Interstate Bridge with what I bought? We answer those first, then list every licensed store in Vancouver by area.

Portland wins on price and selection. Oregon's total cannabis tax in Portland is 20%, with no sales tax, while every recreational sale in Vancouver carries Washington's 37% excise tax plus sales tax. Most Vancouver stores already include the excise in the shelf price, so look at the final total when you compare. Vancouver wins on hours: most stores here stay open until 10:55 or 11 p.m., after Portland shops have stopped selling at 10.

The catch is the river. The Columbia is a state line, and taking cannabis across the I-5 or I-205 bridge breaks federal law in either direction, even though both states are legal. Buy in Portland and use it in Oregon; buy in Vancouver and keep it in Washington. Our page on buying weed in Vancouver vs. Portland goes deeper, and our Portland dispensary guide covers the Oregon side.

What Oregonians Should Know Before Shopping in Vancouver

  • Smaller limit: Washington caps a purchase at 1 ounce of flower (Oregon allows 2), plus 7 grams of concentrate, 16 ounces of edibles or 72 ounces of drinks.
  • No delivery: Oregon lets endorsed stores deliver, but Washington has no legal delivery at all.
  • Bring cash or debit: credit cards almost never work, and reviewers say some Main Street Marijuana stores are cash only.
  • ID: an Oregon driver's license is fine, as is any valid government photo ID showing you are 21 or older.
  • No public use: lighting up at Esther Short Park or on the Waterfront is a civil infraction, as is using in any public place. Hotels usually ban smoking.
  • Driving: Washington sets a 5-nanogram THC blood limit for drivers, which Oregon does not have. Keep opened products in the trunk.

Oregon also allows home growing for adults; Washington does not, for recreational users. Our Washington marijuana laws guide has the full rules. If you are new to dispensaries, read our guides to finding the best dispensary and what to buy at a dispensary.

Medical Cannabis in Vancouver

Washington uses medically endorsed retail stores instead of separate medical dispensaries, and 15 Vancouver stores have that endorsement. A patient in the Department of Health database with a recognition card pays no sales tax at those stores, is exempt from the 37% excise on DOH-compliant products and can buy up to three times the adult-use amount. Registered patients 18 to 20 can also shop there. An Oregon medical card does not count in Washington, so Oregon patients buy as recreational customers.
