Cannabis Rules for JBLM Service Members and Visitors in Tacoma

Tacoma dispensaries will sell to any adult 21 or older with valid ID, but the U.S. military prohibits cannabis use by service members regardless of state law, and cannabis is illegal on federal property — including Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Service members who buy or use cannabis off base can still face military discipline, and bringing it onto JBLM is a federal offense.

Off-duty: military rules still apply.

JBLM sits just south of Tacoma, and Parkland’s Pacific Avenue stores are among the closest to its gates. This page explains the rules; it is not legal advice.

Service Members

Cannabis remains a controlled substance under federal law, and the military’s drug policy applies to active-duty, Reserve and Guard members wherever they are. Washington’s legalization does not change that, and service members are subject to drug testing.

Civilian Employees, Contractors and Families

Off base, adults 21 and over can legally buy and use cannabis under Washington law, on private property where it is allowed. But cannabis cannot be brought onto JBLM or any federal property, and federal employers and contractors may have their own drug-free workplace rules.

Visitors

Shop at any licensed or tribal store, keep cannabis off federal land — including JBLM and Mount Rainier National Park — and never take it across state lines.
