Tacoma has 21 legal cannabis stores: shops licensed by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) plus stores run by the Puyallup Tribe of Indians. To buy, you need to be 21 or older with a valid photo ID, and visitors from other states are welcome. Sales are allowed from 8 a.m. to midnight, and 17 Tacoma stores carry a medical endorsement.

Tacoma is one of the few Washington cities where you can buy from a tribal-owned dispensary without leaving city limits, and it sits next to the state's largest military installation. Both facts shape who shops here and which rules apply to them. This page lists every legal store in Tacoma, groups them by neighborhood, and covers what tribal stores, JBLM personnel and Mount Rainier day-trippers should know.
Every Legal Dispensary in Tacoma, WA: State-Licensed and Tribal
Of the 21 Tacoma stores on this page, 3 are Commencement Bay Cannabis locations owned by the Puyallup Tribe. The rest hold WSLCB retail licenses. Tribal stores don't appear on the state's retailer list because they operate under a compact between the tribe and the state, and many store finders miss them for that reason. We include them and mark each with a Tribal-owned badge.
17 Tacoma stores are medically endorsed, a high share for any Washington city, so patients rarely have to drive far. Chains with more than one Tacoma branch include Clear Choice Cannabis and Zips Cannabis. Click any store for its license number, location, phone and directions; the list is refreshed from state records every month. Some stores advertise with us, and any paid placement is clearly labeled.

Buying From Tacoma's Tribal Dispensaries
The Puyallup Tribe of Indians runs Commencement Bay Cannabis under a cannabis compact with the State of Washington. Three of its stores have Tacoma addresses (Red and Black, covered in our downtown and Northeast Tacoma guide, and the 4.9-star Green store in East Tacoma), and more locations sit just over the line in Fife. They sell to adults 21 and older with a valid ID, the same as any state-licensed shop.
For a shopper, buying at a tribal store feels much like buying anywhere else in Tacoma. Bring ID, expect cash or debit, and keep the purchase sealed on the way home. Our guide to tribal dispensaries in Tacoma has more on each Commencement Bay location.
JBLM Service Members, Contractors and Federal Land
Joint Base Lewis-McChord is just south of Tacoma, and a large share of the city's shoppers are soldiers, airmen, civilian employees or contractors there. State law does not change military rules. Cannabis is illegal on JBLM and every other military base, the armed forces ban its use by service members, and buying off base can still lead to discipline. Federal contractors and civilian staff may face drug testing under their employer's rules.
A Tacoma store will sell to any adult with valid ID, military ID included, but that doesn't make it safe for someone in uniform. See our page on cannabis rules for JBLM.
The same federal rule applies on public land. Mount Rainier National Park, southeast of Tacoma, bans cannabis under federal law, so leave it in Tacoma if you are heading to Paradise or Sunrise.
Paying, Hours and ID at Tacoma Dispensaries
- ID: an unexpired driver's license or state ID from any state, a passport or a military ID. Tacoma stores check it at the door or counter, and many scan it.
- Payment: cash and debit at most stores, often with an ATM inside. Credit cards rarely work because card networks don't allow cannabis purchases.
- Hours: state rules permit sales from 8 a.m. to midnight. Six Tacoma stores in our list use the full window; others close earlier, so check the listing.
- Delivery: not available. Washington has no legal cannabis delivery, so you have to go in person.

Tacoma Prices and Taxes
Washington's 37% cannabis excise tax applies to every recreational sale at a state-licensed store, and sales tax is added on top at checkout. Most Tacoma shops include the excise tax in the price on the shelf, so compare totals rather than tags. Tacoma prices sit in the normal range for the Puget Sound region. Day-of-the-week specials, first-visit discounts, loyalty programs and larger packs are the usual ways to cut the bill, and Dank's Warehouse offers online-order discounts.
Washington Cannabis Laws for Tacoma Shoppers
Adult-use cannabis has been legal statewide since Initiative 502 passed in 2012. The points below are the ones that come up most in Tacoma; our Washington marijuana laws guide has the complete rules.
- Per-visit limit: 1 ounce of flower, 7 grams of concentrate, 16 ounces of edibles or 72 ounces of infused liquid for adults 21 and over.
- Public use: lighting up at Point Defiance, on Ruston Way or anywhere in public view is a civil infraction, with a fine of up to $50 plus assessments. Use it on private property where the owner agrees.
- Driving: the legal limit is 5 nanograms of active THC per milliliter of blood, and impairment below that can still be charged. Keep any opened package in the trunk.
- Growing at home: not allowed for recreational users. A 2026 bill to change that did not become law.
Medical Marijuana in Tacoma
Washington doesn't have separate medical dispensaries. Instead, the Department of Health endorses some retail stores, and 17 Tacoma stores have that endorsement, each shown with a Medical badge. Patients entered in the DOH database who carry a recognition card pay no sales tax there, are exempt from the 37% excise tax on DOH-compliant products, and may buy up to three times the adult-use limits. Registered patients aged 18 to 20 can shop at endorsed stores too. Out-of-state medical cards are not accepted, so visiting patients buy as adult-use customers.
Popular Strains at Tacoma Dispensaries
Tacoma menus rotate with each new harvest from Washington farms. Strains that show up often include Gelato Runtz, Purple Kush, White Runtz, Strawberry Cough, Gelato Cookies and Platinum Sour Diesel, each with its own guide to effects and lineage. Not sure what to pick? Start with our strain-choosing guide, then read up on sativa vs. indica and terpenes.

How we build this list: Store names, addresses and licence numbers come from the WSLCB's list of active cannabis retailers; medical endorsements come from the Department of Health; tribal stores, which are not in the state list, come from tribal and public sources. We refresh the data monthly. Featured placements are paid and clearly labelled.
