Dispensaries in Erie

Erie has 5 dispensaries licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. They are open only to registered medical patients and caregivers who carry an active Pennsylvania ID card, which in turn requires Pennsylvania residency. Ohio and New York shoppers, who drive past these stores on I-90, cannot buy here even with a medical card from home. Three of the five sit on or just off upper Peach Street near the I-90 interchange.

Erie is the one Pennsylvania city squeezed between two adult-use states. New York begins about half an hour east on I-90 and Ohio about half an hour west, and both sell cannabis to adults 21 and older. The stores here are run by just three companies, RISE, Curaleaf and Sunnyside, and they cater to Erie County patients rather than to the summer crowds headed for Presque Isle.

Visiting a Dispensary in Erie: Card, ID, Payment and Hours

Show two documents: your Pennsylvania medical marijuana card and a Pennsylvania license or ID. An Ohio or New York license will not get you through the door, because registration requires proof of Pennsylvania residency. Some stores book first-time patients by appointment. A pharmacist or physician is on hand, in person or by video, whenever patients are being served. Plan on cash or debit.

Erie and Pennsylvania Cannabis Laws: Purchase Limits, Public Use and Driving

  • Supply limit: up to a 90-day supply per purchase cycle, which regulations put at 192 units (a unit is 3.5 grams of dry leaf, a gram of concentrate, or 100 milligrams of THC in a capsule, oil, tincture or topical). You may restock in the final seven days of each 30-day period.
  • No smoking: Flower is sold for vaporization only, and smoking it is a crime for patients too.
  • No edibles: Stores do not sell them, but the law lets patients or caregivers stir medical marijuana into their own food.
  • Driving: Pennsylvania's DUI law covers any amount of THC or its metabolite in the blood, and a medical card is not a defense.

Cannabis Taxes in Erie

No sales tax applies to medical marijuana in Pennsylvania, and we found no local cannabis tax in Erie. The only cannabis tax is a 5% levy on growers and processors, which by law is not itemized for patients. For price context, see our 2026 cannabis prices by state.

Medical Marijuana in Erie

An Erie County resident gets a card by registering online with a Pennsylvania license or ID, seeing a state-registered practitioner for certification, and paying the $50 annual fee, which is waived for people in Medicaid, CHIP, SNAP, WIC or PACE/PACENET. The card is then good at any Pennsylvania dispensary.

New York and Ohio are not a workaround. Buying in either state is legal there for adults 21 and older, but bringing it back across the line into Pennsylvania without a Pennsylvania card is illegal possession, and crossing a state line with cannabis violates federal law. Going the other way is risky too: since March 20, 2026, Ohio law treats marijuana from an out-of-state dispensary as contraband, so an Erie patient's medicine is not protected in Ohio.

Will Pennsylvania legalize? Not so far. HB 1200 passed the House 102 to 101 in May 2025 and was stopped by a 3 to 7 committee vote in the Senate, and SB 120 has not left committee. Adult use is still illegal as of October 2026.
