Burlington has 12 dispensaries licensed by the Vermont Cannabis Control Board (CCB). Anyone 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID can buy, including visitors from other states. Every Burlington store in our directory is an adult-use retailer, and Burlington voters chose to allow those stores on Town Meeting Day, March 2, 2021, VTDigger reported.
Burlington is Vermont's biggest cannabis market by a wide margin. It has more licensed stores than Rutland and Montpelier combined, and most of them sit within walking distance of the Church Street Marketplace. That makes it the one place in the state where you can compare several shops on foot in an afternoon.

Visiting a Dispensary in Burlington: ID, Payment and Hours
Stores check a valid government-issued photo ID when you walk in and again before you pay. A driver's license from any state works, and so does a passport. Burlington and Vermont Cannabis Laws: Purchase Limits, Public Use and Driving
Since July 1, 2026, a Vermont retailer may sell one customer up to 2 ounces of cannabis, or the equivalent in other products, per transaction. Adults may possess up to 2 ounces or 10 grams of hashish. Flower above 30% THC cannot be sold, and flavored vape oils are banned statewide.
Not on Church Street, the waterfront or campus. Using cannabis in a public place, including streets, sidewalks and parks, is a civil violation with fines starting at up to $100. That covers the marketplace, the bike path and the city's lakefront parks. The University of Vermont does not allow cannabis anywhere on university property, including residence halls, and that ban covers medical cannabis too. Driving while impaired is DUI, and an open container in the passenger area brings a fine of up to $200. Read our full Vermont marijuana laws guide.

Every adult-use sale in Vermont carries a 14% cannabis excise tax plus the 6% state sales tax. Burlington has also charged a 1% local option sales tax since 2006, according to the Vermont Department of Taxes, and that local tax applies to retail cannabis sales. Expect about 21% in total at the register. Registered medical patients pay no tax on medical purchases. See how that compares in our 2026 cannabis prices by state guide.

Our Burlington list is made up of adult-use retailers. Vermont's medical dispensaries are licensed separately, and the medical registry is open only to Vermont residents.
