You can make a free grinder from an empty pill bottle and a clean nickel: put dry bud in the bottle, drop in the coin, snap the lid on and shake. The coin knocks the flower into small, even pieces in under a minute. It works best on dry flower, and it costs nothing if you already have the bottle.
A purpose-built grinder is nicer, but it is not required. This guide covers the pill bottle method step by step, three other no-cost ways to break up flower, how to keep your improvised grinder clean, and when it makes sense to buy a real one. It is written for adults 21+ in states where cannabis is legal.
Why Grind Cannabis at All?
Ground flower burns more evenly in a pipe, a joint or a vaporizer chamber than whole buds do. Small pieces pack consistently, so airflow is more even, and you waste less because you can see how much you are using. Grinding is also the first step in many recipes, including infusions, where finer material is easier to measure. For dosing and edibles, see our cannabis dosage guide.
The Pill Bottle and Nickel Grinder
What you need
- An empty prescription pill bottle with a snap or screw lid. Wash it out and let it dry fully first. Peel or cover the label if it carries your name or medication details.
- One clean nickel. Wash the coin with soap and water and dry it, since coins pick up grime from handling.
- Dry cannabis flower
How to do it
- Break the flower into small nuggets by hand and drop them in the bottle. Fill it no more than about halfway so the coin has room to move.
- Drop in the nickel and close the lid firmly.
- Shake hard for 20 to 30 seconds. The coin hits the nuggets and breaks them into smaller pieces.
- Open the bottle over a plate or tray and remove the coin before you pour. Do not smoke or ingest the nickel.
- Check the texture. If it is still chunky, put it back and shake again.
The method works best with drier bud. Sticky, fresh flower clumps and coats the coin and the walls. If your flower is very moist, leave it in the open air briefly or break it up by hand first.
Other Free Ways to Break Up Flower
| Method | How it works | Best for | Downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pill bottle and coin | The coin batters the flower as you shake | Small amounts, dry flower | Sticky bud clumps |
| Fingers | Pull and pinch buds apart | Quick bowl or a single joint | Resin stays on your hands |
| Scissors in a small bowl | Snip the bud into small pieces | Sticky flower | Resin builds up on the blades |
| Card or flat edge on a plate | Chop and rock the bud | Fine, even results | Slower; needs a clean flat surface |
Tips for Better Results
- Grind just before use. Ground flower dries out faster and loses aroma, so grind only what you plan to use.
- Remove stems and seeds first. Hard stems can puncture papers and are harsh to smoke.
- Do not overgrind. Powdery flower burns hot and fast and can clog a pipe screen. Stop once the pieces are small and even.
- Use a tray. Open and pour over a plate so nothing lands on the floor.
Troubleshooting the Pill Bottle Method
- The flower comes out as powder. You shook too long or the flower was very dry. Shake in shorter bursts and check after each one.
- Big chunks remain. The bottle was too full. Grind in two smaller batches so the coin can move.
- The lid pops off. Use a bottle with a snug lid, and hold it closed with your thumb while you shake.
- The coin gets stuck in the flower. Tip the bottle gently and look before you pour. Remove the coin first, every time.
- Everything is sticky. The flower is too fresh or resinous for this method. Use scissors instead, and clean the blades afterward.
None of this requires special skill, but it does reward patience. Small test batches teach you quickly how your bottle and your flower behave together.
Keeping It Clean
An improvised grinder collects resin like any other. Wash the bottle and coin with warm water and dish soap when they get sticky and let them dry before the next use. For heavy buildup, soak them in isopropyl alcohol and rinse thoroughly, the same method we describe for glass in our guide to cleaning a pipe or bong. Do not leave cannabis in an old medication bottle where a child or houseguest could mistake it for medicine. Label it clearly and keep it out of reach: the CDC advises keeping cannabis products in a locked, childproof container, out of children’s sight and reach.
When a Real Grinder Is Worth Buying
If you use cannabis often, a proper multi-piece grinder gives a more consistent texture, catches kief in a separate chamber and does not need the coin. You can find them at dispensaries and smoke shops. In Washington, licensed stores sell accessories alongside flower, and in Oregon you can browse licensed dispensaries for the same. Our Cannabis 101 library covers other basics.
Legal and Safety Notes
- Cannabis remains illegal under federal law for adult use. See our federal marijuana laws guide before traveling with it.
- Check local rules for use and possession. In Washington the adult limit is one ounce of flower; see our Washington marijuana laws guide and the Oregon marijuana laws guide.
- Do not grind in a blender or food processor you use for food, because resin is difficult to remove.
- Smoking affects your lungs. The CDC notes that cannabis smoke contains many of the same toxins and irritants as tobacco smoke.
Grinder FAQ
How do you grind weed without a grinder?
Use your fingers, a pair of scissors in a small bowl, or a pill bottle with a clean coin inside. All three break flower into smoking-size pieces without special equipment.
Can I use a coin in a pill bottle every time?
Yes, as long as the coin is clean and the flower is dry. Wash both when they become sticky.
Why is my flower sticking to the bottle?
It is likely too moist or too resinous. Let it air out briefly, or switch to scissors, which handle sticky flower better.
Is it okay to use a coffee grinder?
It will powder the flower and leave resin that is hard to clean. If you do use one, keep it only for cannabis.
Do I need to grind weed?
No. Whole bud can be smoked or vaporized. Grinding makes it burn more evenly and makes dosing easier.
