Bubba Kush is an indica-dominant cannabis strain usually described as a cross of OG Kush and Northern Lights, known for a heavy, sedating body effect and a hash, coffee and chocolate flavor. Its origin is murky, with stories pointing to Florida in the mid 1990s and Los Angeles in the late 1990s. Typical THC runs from the mid teens to low 20s.

Where Bubba Kush Comes From
Bubba Kush has a famously tangled backstory. One widely repeated version says that around the mid 1990s a grower named Matt Berger, nicknamed Bubba, crossed an OG Kush with what he understood to be Northern Lights. His own account credits some Northern Lights seeds that came to him from a friend, and a Kush plant he found in a bag in South Florida. Dates in different tellings run from 1996 to 1997.
A second thread places the strain in Los Angeles, where growers and the rap group Cypress Hill helped spread it. Sorting those stories out is hard, and the names Bubba, Bubba Kush and Bubba OG Kush are used loosely. Collectors sometimes distinguish a so-called pre-98 Bubba from the many later cuts.
Some growers doubt the Northern Lights part because the plant looks like it carries Afghani genes, with its stocky structure and chunky buds. No lab or seed bank has settled it. Whatever the exact tree, Bubba Kush became a mainstay of indica menus and gave rise to Bubba crosses such as Pink Bubba and Bubba Banner.
Bubba Kush Effects: What It Feels Like
Bubba Kush is a body-first strain. The head effect is mild and pleasant, a quieter, content mood, and then the weight arrives: heavy limbs, a loose back and shoulders, and a strong urge to settle down. Appetite often goes up.
It is an evening strain for most people. Small amounts can feel mellow and comforting, while larger doses lead quickly to sleep. It is a poor fit for anyone who needs to drive, work or stay focused after using it.
Bubba Kush Terpenes, Aroma and Flavor
The aroma is a mix of sweet hash, roasted coffee and dark chocolate over an earthy, slightly woody base. Some phenotypes lean more toward the fuel and pine of OG Kush. The smoke is thick and earthy on the inhale with a sweet, coffee-like finish.
Beta-caryophyllene, myrcene and limonene are the terpenes most often reported. Caryophyllene gives the peppery, hash-like note, while myrcene adds the earthy, heavy character associated with sedation. Terpene levels shift from grower to grower.
- Beta-caryophyllene: peppery and spicy, also found in black pepper and cloves
- Myrcene: earthy, musky and herbal, also found in mango and hops
- Limonene: bright citrus, also found in lemon and orange peel
Terpene levels vary from grower to grower and batch to batch, so check the lab label on the package. Learn more in our guide to cannabis terpenes.
Side Effects and How to Use Bubba Kush
Dry mouth and dry eyes are the usual complaints. Because Bubba Kush is sedating, drowsiness is common, and a large dose late at night can cause grogginess the next morning. Some people feel dizzy or foggy. Start low, and do not combine it with driving or tasks that need attention.
With Bubba Kush, as with any strain, a smaller dose usually avoids anxiety or grogginess. Our cannabis safety guide covers what to do if you take too much.
Do People Use Bubba Kush for Medical Reasons?
Users often report reaching for Bubba Kush at night for trouble sleeping, and for body tension, stress or low appetite. This is anecdotal, and anyone managing a medical issue should speak with a clinician.
These are user reports, not clinical findings. For what research actually supports, see our cannabis health and research section, and talk to your doctor before using cannabis for a health condition.
Growing Bubba Kush
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Flowering: 8–9 weeks
- Yield: Medium
- Height: Short and bushy
- Environment: Indoor preferred; outdoor in warm, dry climates
Bubba Kush grows short and bushy with broad leaves and flowers in about eight to nine weeks. It stays manageable in a tent. The buds are dense and resin-heavy, which makes it vulnerable to bud rot in humid weather. In the wet Pacific Northwest fall, outdoor growers should plan for good airflow, defoliation and an earlier harvest.
Home-grow rules depend on the state: adults can grow at home in states such as California (six plants per residence), Michigan (12 per residence) and Oregon (four per household), while Washington and Illinois allow home growing only for registered medical patients. Check your state in our cannabis laws by state guide before you plant anything.
