In a recent Time magazine article, acclaimed actor Morgan Freeman spoke out about the senselessness of marijuana prohibition. Freeman is quoted as saying, “Marijuana prohibition is just the stupidest law possible…Just legalize it and tax it like we do liquor.”
Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1937, Freeman grew up in the South during segregation. The youngest of four siblings, he was sent as an infant to live with his grandmother in the deep south of Mississippi. The foundation for his views on racism and politics were no doubt founded during his early childhood.
He started his acting career in the 1970’s on the PBS children’s show The Electric Company. He would later go on to be one of Hollywood’s biggest names appearing in hit movies such as: Seven, The Shawshank Redemption, Wanted and Bruce Almighty. His deep monotone voice is just as famous as his face. He has narrated March of the Penguins, the introduction to CBS Evening News and the Discovery Channels Through the Wormhole. He has received several awards including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award
Never shy about his political views, Freeman is well known for being spoken out and unapologetic. On the issue of race in America, He told Mike Wallace, “I don’t want a black history month. Black history is American history. I’m going to stop calling you a white man and I want you to stop calling me a black man.”
