Seized Marijuana
Every day we hear of law enforcement, namely the DEA(Drug Enforcement Agency), seizing hundreds of pounds of marijuana either from Mexican drug cartels or domestically in organized crime rings. Millions of dollars worth of drugs are pulled off the streets everyday because of the billions of dollars the United States government pours into enforcing these laws.
What is the end result?
Statistically, the price of marijuana has not changed for years. Virtually any high school student in the country can find marijuana if he or she requires it, which has led to a rise in teenage use according to the DEA. Correspondingly, we are running up the government deficit to absurd levels. Last time I checked it was a staggering $14 trillion, which amounts to equal our nations annual GDP!
What could this mean?
Advocates of marijuana illegality would claim that this means we must continue to ramp up the War Against Drugs and ruin the image the American public has of marijuana in order to curb use. On the opposing side of the spectrum, those in favor of marijuana legalization would say that the government should allocate their funding to more harmful areas of law enforcement.
What does it actually mean?
Americans are rational people if they saw people smoke marijuana and then behave like heroin addicts, why would we see the sheer numbers of people try it and use it regularly. That is why heroin use has not been increasing and marijuana use among all facets of society has been increasing.
What is the solution?
Become informed about all the issues regarding marijuana and pass along that information to your friends so that when marijuana reform legislation appears on the ballot near you, there will be more informed voters!
Luckily, our nation has made great progress attempting to introduce marijuana reform laws. There are now states that have passed or are in the process of passing medical marijuana laws and decriminalization laws. It is only a matter of time before many more join the fight as politicians find that marijuana is not as taboo a political topic as they originally thought.
