Butte has 21 dispensaries licensed by the Montana Department of Revenue. Anyone 21 or older with a valid photo ID can buy adult-use cannabis here, and you do not need to live in Montana. Butte-Silver Bow voted for adult-use sales, so every store in town sells to the public, and the same stores can also serve medical cardholders. Adult-use purchases carry the 20% state tax plus a 3% local option tax that Butte-Silver Bow has charged since October 2022.
Butte's market splits in two, much like the city itself. A handful of stores sit in the old brick blocks of Uptown, on Main, Galena and Montana streets, while most of the rest line Harrison Avenue on the flats, where the city's chain stores and fast food are. Ratings here run unusually high: of the stores with at least 100 Google reviews, nearly every one scores 4.8 stars or better.

Butte and Montana Cannabis Laws: Purchase Limits, Public Use and Driving
An adult can buy and carry up to 1 ounce, with no more than 8 grams of concentrate and 800 milligrams of THC in edibles. Since July 1, 2026, edibles are capped at 5 milligrams per serving and 100 milligrams per package.
- Public places: Smoking in public can bring a civil fine of up to $50. That covers Uptown sidewalks, the parks and street events such as the St. Patrick's Day crowds.
- Hotels: State law bans use in hotel rooms that are not set aside for smoking. Private homes with the owner's permission are the legal option.
- Driving: Butte sits where Interstates 15 and 90 meet, and plenty of buyers are passing through. No use in a moving vehicle, keep cannabis in the trunk or a closed container away from passengers, and know that 5 ng/mL of THC in the blood counts as DUI.
- Leaving Montana: Taking cannabis across any state line is prohibited, and Idaho, a few hours west on I-90, bans it outright.
