Dispensaries in Whitefish

Whitefish has 14 dispensaries licensed by the Montana Department of Revenue. Skiers, rail passengers and Glacier National Park visitors can all shop here with a valid ID showing they are 21; Montana has no residency rule for adult-use buyers. Medical cardholders can buy at the same stores. Remember that the national park, a short drive east, is federal land where cannabis stays illegal.

Whitefish came late to storefront cannabis. A 2012 city ordinance kept dispensary storefronts out of city limits until January 1, 2022, according to the Flathead Beacon, and new shops opened only after that, some with city council approval for a specific site. The result is a young, review-heavy market: four Whitefish stores hold a perfect 5.0 Google rating, and the top two have more than 300 reviews each, many of them from visitors.

Whitefish and Montana Cannabis Laws: Purchase Limits, Public Use and Driving

You can buy and carry up to 1 ounce, with no more than 8 grams of concentrate and 800 milligrams of THC in edibles.

  • Glacier National Park: National parks are federal land, and possessing or using marijuana there is illegal no matter what Montana allows. That includes campgrounds and the Going-to-the-Sun Road.
  • Public places: Smoking on the street, at City Beach or on the trails can bring a civil fine of up to $50.
  • Canada and Idaho: Never take cannabis toward the Canadian border; crossing with it is illegal in both countries. Idaho, to the west, bans it outright.
  • Driving: 5 ng/mL of THC in the blood is DUI. Keep products in the trunk or a closed container.

Cannabis Taxes in Whitefish

Adult-use purchases carry Montana's 20% state tax and Flathead County's 3% local option tax, which the county has charged since March 2023. Flathead does not add its local tax to medical sales, so cardholders pay the 4% state tax. Whitefish also has its own 3% resort tax on luxury items, and the Flathead Beacon has reported that it applies to recreational cannabis sold inside city limits, so a downtown receipt can show a third line. Check your receipt; stores outside city limits may differ. Our cannabis prices by state report compares Montana with other markets.

Every Whitefish store can serve Montana medical cardholders, who skip the county's local tax here. Out-of-state cards are not accepted.
