Bellingham is a college town 20 miles south of British Columbia, and both facts matter at the register. Western Washington University students need to know the age rules and the campus policy. Canadians, who can buy legal cannabis at home, need to know that the border is where the trouble starts. This guide covers both, then lists Bellingham's stores by area.

Canadian Visitors and the Border: Buy Here, Use Here

Cannabis is legal in British Columbia and in Washington, but not between them. Carrying it over the border in either direction is illegal: U.S. Customs and Border Protection applies federal law at the Peace Arch, Pacific Highway, Lynden and Sumas crossings, and Canada treats bringing cannabis into the country as a serious offense.

Canadians 21 or older can shop at any Bellingham store with a valid passport. Plan to use what you buy in Washington, on private property where the owner allows it, and to finish it or leave it behind before you head north. Never drive to the border after using it. Our page on Canadian visitors buying weed in Bellingham has more.

WWU Students: Age, Campus Rules and Medical Exceptions

You must be 21 to buy recreational cannabis in Bellingham, whatever your student status. The one exception is a registered medical patient aged 18 to 20, who may buy at a medically endorsed store. Cannabis is not allowed in WWU residence halls or anywhere on campus under university policy, so students who live on campus have nowhere legal to use it there.

Bellingham Cannabis Questions, Answered

What to Expect at a Bellingham Store

Bring a valid, unexpired photo ID: any U.S. driver's license or state ID, a passport (the usual choice for Canadians) or a military ID. Staff check it on the way in or at the counter, and many stores scan it. Pay with cash or a U.S. debit card; most stores have an ATM, and credit cards are rarely taken because card networks block cannabis sales. Washington has no legal delivery, so plan on shopping in person.

Each adult can buy up to 1 ounce of flower, 7 grams of concentrate, 16 ounces of solid edibles or 72 ounces of infused drinks per visit. Using it in public, at Boulevard Park, on the Interurban Trail or anywhere visible to the public, is a civil infraction, and most hotels ban smoking. Keep opened products in the trunk while driving; the glove box doesn't count. Our full Washington marijuana laws guide covers driving limits and penalties. First-timers can also read our guides to finding the best dispensary and what to buy at a dispensary.

Taxes, Prices and Medical Savings in Bellingham

A 37% excise tax applies to every recreational sale in Washington, and sales tax is added at checkout. Bellingham stores usually show the excise tax already built into the shelf price, so compare totals. Prices are in line with the rest of Western Washington; rotating daily deals, first-visit offers and loyalty points are the main ways to save.

Because almost every Bellingham store is medically endorsed, registered patients have more choice here than in most cities. A patient in the Department of Health database with a recognition card pays no sales tax, is exempt from the excise tax on DOH-compliant products, and can buy up to three times the adult-use limits. BC medical documents and other out-of-state cards are not accepted.

Popular Strains at Bellingham Dispensaries

How we build this list: Store names, addresses and licence numbers come from the WSLCB's list of active cannabis retailers; medical endorsements come from the Department of Health; tribal stores, which are not in the state list, come from tribal and public sources. We refresh the data monthly. Featured placements are paid and clearly labelled.
