Adults 21 and over in Washington can buy and possess up to 1 ounce of cannabis flower, 7 grams of concentrate, 16 ounces of solid edibles and 72 ounces of infused liquids. These are personal possession limits, and stores may not sell you more than that amount. Registered medical patients can buy up to three times the adult-use limits at medically endorsed stores.

Washington's Adult-Use Limits
Under RCW 69.50.360 and RCW 69.50.4013, the amounts an adult 21 or older can legally buy and possess are:
- 1 ounce (28 grams) of usable cannabis flower
- 7 grams of cannabis concentrate (wax, shatter, vape oil)
- 16 ounces of solid cannabis-infused products (edibles)
- 72 ounces of liquid cannabis-infused products — or, for low-dose drinks packaged at 4 mg THC or less per unit, up to 200 mg of THC
How Combined Purchases Work
Washington’s Liquor and Cannabis Board prohibits stores from helping anyone obtain more than the personal possession amount (WAC 314-55-095). In practice, stores track each category against its limit; ask your budtender if you are buying across several categories. Because the limits are possession limits, buying the maximum at several stores in one day can put you over the legal amount.
Medical Patient Limits
Registered patients with a DOH recognition card can buy up to three times the adult-use amounts at medically endorsed stores, pay no sales tax there, and are exempt from the 37% excise tax on DOH-compliant products. See medical marijuana in Seattle.
Taxes on Cannabis in Seattle
Shelf prices in Washington generally include the 37% cannabis excise tax, and state and local sales tax is added at checkout. Registered medical patients at endorsed stores skip the sales tax and, on DOH-compliant products, the excise tax.
What You Can't Do With Your Purchase
You can’t use it in public (a civil infraction), keep an opened package in a car’s passenger area (a traffic infraction), or take it across state lines or onto a flight (illegal under federal law). Recreational home growing is also still not legal in Washington.
