Where Hash Plant Comes From

The name covers two related things. The first is an old, very resinous Afghan clone called Hash Plant that circulated among growers before the seed era. The second is the Sensi Seeds strain built from it. Sensi says it tested a series of crosses and backcrosses with Northern Lights #1 before release and settled on a line that is about 75% Hash Plant and 25% Northern Lights #1. Leafly and AllBud describe the same Hash Plant and Northern Lights pairing.

AllBud places its origin in Holland in the early 1980s, after which it became well known in the United States. Sensi lists prizes at the 2002 Highlife Festival and the 2004 Copa de la Marihuana. Leafly lists Champagne Kush and Mr. Nice Guy among its offspring. Hash Plant clones also show up in many West Coast breeding projects, but those lines are not always traceable to Sensi’s version.

Hash Plant Effects: What It Feels Like

Leafly reviewers most often describe Hash Plant as sleepy, relaxed and hungry, and the site calls the body high rapid and powerful. Sensi describes a strong body stone with a touch of creative energy mixed in. AllBud users report deep relaxation, couch-lock and easy sleep.

This is a classic evening hash-plant feel: it comes on fast, settles in the body and stays there. A small amount can be enough to unwind after work, while larger doses tend to pin people to the couch. Start low if you are not used to heavy indicas.

Hash Plant Terpenes, Aroma and Flavor

Sensi describes a sweet Afghan hashish scent and a mild hash taste with a thick, spicy smoke. Leafly lists woody, spicy herbal and earthy flavors, and AllBud adds dank, kushy and sweet notes. Expect an old-school hash profile rather than candy or fruit, with a peppery bite on the exhale, especially when vaporized.

Leafly reports myrcene as the dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and ocimene. Myrcene gives the earthy base, caryophyllene adds spice, and ocimene can bring a faint sweet, herbal note.

  • Myrcene: earthy, musky and herbal, also found in mango and hops
  • Beta-caryophyllene: peppery and spicy, also found in black pepper and cloves
  • Ocimene: sweet, herbal and woody, also found in mint and basil

Terpene levels vary from grower to grower and batch to batch, so check the lab label on the package. Learn more in our guide to cannabis terpenes.

Side Effects and How to Use Hash Plant

Leafly reviewers list dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness as the most common complaints. Heavy sleepiness and couch-lock are expected at higher doses, so it is a poor fit before driving, work or anything that needs focus.

With Hash Plant, as with any strain, a smaller dose usually avoids anxiety or grogginess. Our cannabis safety guide covers what to do if you take too much.

Do People Use Hash Plant for Medical Reasons?

Leafly readers most often report reaching for Hash Plant during pain (44%), stress (42%) and anxiety (37%). AllBud users also mention insomnia and muscle tension. These are personal reports, not clinical evidence.

Growing Hash Plant

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Flowering: About 40–45 days (Sensi Seeds)
  • Yield: Large, especially in a sea of green
  • Height: Compact; little stretch in flower
  • Environment: Indoor (hydro favored); dry outdoor climates

Sensi Seeds calls Hash Plant easy, robust and resilient, with a very short flowering time of about 40–45 days and little height gain once flowering starts. Yields are best in a sea of green from clones of one mother, and Leafly notes it clones easily. Plants are heavy feeders in flower. Sensi warns that the dense, resinous buds need good ventilation to avoid mold, and Leafly says it suits dry outdoor climates, so damp Pacific Northwest autumns call for indoor or greenhouse growing.

Home-grow rules depend on the state: adults can grow at home in states such as California (six plants per residence), Michigan (12 per residence) and Oregon (four per household), while Washington and Illinois allow home growing only for registered medical patients.
