To roll a joint, grind about half a gram to a gram of cannabis, make a small filter tip from thin card, lay the tip and the flower in a rolling paper, shape it into a cylinder between your fingers, tuck the unglued edge under the flower, roll it up, lick the glue strip to seal it, then pack and twist the open end. The tuck is the step that makes or breaks a joint, and it takes most people a few tries to learn.

The joint is the simplest way to smoke cannabis: a paper, some flower and a few minutes. Below is the full step-by-step method, a guide to paper sizes, fixes for joints that run or won’t draw, and the shortcuts (cones and rolling machines) for when you’d rather not roll at all.

What You Need

Item Notes
Rolling papers 1 1/4 size is the easiest to learn on. Many smokers prefer thin hemp or rice papers because they add less paper taste.
Cannabis About 0.5 to 1 gram for a standard joint.
Grinder Or break it up by hand. See our homemade grinder guide.
Filter tips (crutch) Pre-made tip booklets, or a strip of thin card such as a business card. Not cigarette filters.
Something to pack with A pen, chopstick or the end of a lighter.
Rolling tray Optional, but it saves a lot of spilled flower.

Rolling Paper Sizes

Size Typical fill Good for
Single wide About 0.3 to 0.5 g A quick solo smoke
1 1/4 About 0.5 to 0.75 g Beginners; the most common size
1 1/2 About 0.75 to 1 g Sharing with one or two people
King size (and king slim) About 1 g or more Groups; harder to roll evenly

Fill amounts are approximate and depend on how tightly you roll.

How to Roll a Joint, Step by Step

1. Grind the flower

Pick out stems and seeds and grind to a medium, fluffy texture. Even grind means even burn. Powder-fine flower packs too densely and draws hard.

2. Make the filter tip

Cut a strip of thin card about half an inch wide and an inch and a half long. Make three or four small accordion folds at one end (an M or W shape), then roll the rest of the strip around the folds into a firm cylinder that fits the paper. The tip keeps flower out of your mouth, gives the joint a firm mouthpiece and lets you smoke it closer to the end without burning your fingers.

3. Load the paper

Hold the paper with the glue strip at the top edge, facing you, and the crease in the middle. Place the tip at one end. Spread the flower evenly along the crease. If you like a cone shape, put a little more flower toward the far end.

4. Shape it

Pinch the paper at both ends and roll it gently back and forth between your thumbs and index fingers. This packs the flower into a cylinder. Spend a few seconds here; a well-shaped core makes the tuck far easier.

5. Tuck

Using your thumbs, tuck the edge of the paper nearest you (the side without glue) over the flower and under it, against the far side. Start the tuck at the filter end, where the firm tip gives you something to roll around, and work your way along.

6. Roll and seal

Once the edge is tucked, roll upward so the paper wraps around the joint until only the glue strip shows. Lick the glue lightly along its full length and press it down, starting at the filter end.

7. Pack and twist

Use a pen or chopstick to gently pack the flower down from the open end. Top off with a pinch more if there’s a gap, then twist the end closed. Twisting keeps flower from falling out and gives you an easy first light.

8. Light it evenly

Tear off or burn away the twisted end, then rotate the joint while holding the flame just at the tip. An even first light helps prevent runs.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
Joint runs or canoes (burns down one side) Uneven fill or a loose tuck; uneven lighting Spread flower evenly; tuck tighter; rotate while lighting. Touch a tiny bit of moisture to the fast-burning side.
Hard to pull Packed too tight; ground too fine; tip too narrow Coarser grind; roll looser; use a slightly wider tip
Loose and floppy Not enough flower or weak tuck Add flower; shape longer before tucking; pack the end
Paper won’t stick Too much or too little moisture on the glue Lick lightly, press firmly, and hold a few seconds
Keeps going out Flower too damp, or rolled too tight Store flower properly; loosen the roll

Shortcuts: Cones and Rolling Machines

Pre-rolled cones are empty, ready-made joints with a tip already in place. You fill, pack and twist. They are the easiest way to get a consistent joint, especially for beginners. Our hemp cone guide covers how to fill one well.

Rolling machines are small hand devices with two rollers and a belt. You load flower and a tip, close the machine, roll it a few times, insert the paper and lick the glue as it rolls in. They make tidy, uniform joints and are a good bridge while you learn by hand.

And of course, most dispensaries sell pre-rolls, finished joints made with lab-tested flower. If you are new, our first dispensary visit guide explains what to buy.

When this page first ran in 2011, it featured Wiz Khalifa’s “DayToday” episode on rolling a perfect joint. The video is still on Wiz Khalifa’s YouTube channel if you want to see the motions at full speed.

Safety and the Law

The CDC notes that cannabis smoke contains many of the same toxins, irritants and carcinogens as tobacco smoke and can raise the risk of bronchitis and cough. Skip tobacco in your joints (a “spliff”), which adds nicotine. You only need to hold a hit briefly; see how long to hold a hit. If you want to avoid smoke entirely, read our guide to smoke-free methods.

In Washington and Oregon, adults 21 and older may possess cannabis, but public use is illegal and driving high is a DUI. See our Washington and Oregon law guides. Want something bigger? Learn how to roll a blunt, and when you’re done, here’s what to do with the roach.

How to Roll a Joint FAQ

How much weed is in a joint?

Most joints hold about 0.5 to 1 gram. A 1 1/4 paper rolled by a beginner typically takes a bit over half a gram.

Do you need a filter to roll a joint?

No, but a tip (crutch) makes rolling easier, keeps flower out of your mouth and lets you finish the joint without burning your fingers. It is not a filter in the cigarette sense and does not remove smoke toxins.

Which way does the glue go when rolling a joint?

Glue strip up, facing you, on the edge farthest from you. You tuck the opposite, unglued edge first, then roll toward the glue.

What is the easiest way to roll a joint for beginners?

Use 1 1/4 papers, a card tip and a medium grind, and spend extra time shaping before you tuck. Or skip rolling and use a pre-rolled cone or a rolling machine.

What is the difference between a joint, a blunt and a spliff?

A joint is cannabis in rolling paper. A blunt uses a cigar or blunt wrap. A spliff mixes cannabis with tobacco in a paper.

Why does my joint keep running?

Usually an uneven fill, a loose tuck or lighting one side. Roll evenly, tuck tightly and rotate the joint as you light it.
