What Is Cannabis Resin?
The word means two different things, and mixing them up is the most common mistake.
- Plant resin: the sticky substance on the flowers that holds the cannabinoids. The National Cancer Institute says the plant’s resin contains the cannabinoids, with the highest concentrations in the female flowers. Concentrates such as hashish, rosin and live resin are made from this resin.
- Pipe resin (reclaim): the dark residue left on glass, metal or ceramic after cannabis is burned. It contains a share of the original cannabinoids mixed with ash, carbon and tar produced by combustion.
Only the first is a product made on purpose. The second is a byproduct, and it carries the downsides of smoke concentrated in one spot.
Why Smoking Pipe Resin Is a Bad Idea
NIDA says the smoke from cannabis products contains many of the same toxins, irritants and carcinogens as tobacco smoke, and that smoking cannabis can harm lung tissue. Long-term smoking is associated with respiratory problems such as large airway inflammation, increased airway resistance, lung hyperinflation and chronic bronchitis. NIDA also notes that more research is needed because many people who use cannabis also use tobacco.
Pipe residue has already been heated once. Reheating it makes a thick, harsh smoke that tends to burn the throat. It is also an unknown quantity: nothing tells you how much THC is in a scraping, so you cannot judge a dose. NIDA warns that higher THC concentrations are associated with a greater likelihood of cannabis use progressing to cannabis use disorder, and a sticky residue gives you no label to read.
What People Do With Leftover Resin
We do not recommend it, but people commonly try one of these approaches:
- Scraping and re-packing. Scraping the residue off and packing it back into the bowl with fresh flower, so it burns with the plant material rather than on its own.
- Mixing with flower in a joint. Spreading small amounts of residue through other cannabis.
- Heating the residue directly. This is the hardest on the lungs and the most likely to burn skin and furniture.
All three involve open flame and a hot, sticky substance. Keep it away from fabric and never leave a lit pipe unattended. If you do smoke it, take small, shallow breaths and stop if you cough heavily.
Better Options Than Reclaim

- Use a vaporizer. NIDA notes that dried cannabis can be vaped with electronic devices such as dry herb vaporizers and vape pens. Heating flower without burning it avoids part of the smoke exposure, though NIDA does not call vaping risk-free.

Should You Ever Make Resin Concentrates at Home?
You may see videos about turning plant matter into oil using butane or other solvents. Do not do it. Butane and propane are flammable gases, and there is no safe home version of solvent extraction. It is also illegal for unlicensed people in Washington under RCW 69.50.450, which reserves the use of butane or other explosive gases for licensed processors.
