Where Mule Fuel Comes From
Mule Fuel comes from ThugPug Genetics, the label of Michigan breeder Gromer Juana. SeedFinder’s breeder listing describes a GMO female, the garlicky Chemdawg and GSC cross also called GMO Cookies or Garlic Cookies, pollinated by Lurch, a ThugPug male kept in-house. SeedFinder records Lurch as a pheno out of a GMO and Mendo Montage line, which explains why a few menus list the cross as GMO x Mendo Montage. Leafly gives Lurch and GMO Cookies as the parents.
The seeds were released as regular seed, never feminized, and SeedFinder notes most stock has sold out. Even so, the strain spread widely as clones and now shows up from many growers, including Autumn Brands and Coastal Sun in California and Sugarbud in Canada. Some menus spell it Muel Fuel.
It has built a strong following: Leafly shows a 4.6 rating from more than 100 ratings and calls it a strain for experienced consumers.
Mule Fuel Effects: What It Feels Like
Leafly reviewers most often tag Mule Fuel sleepy, relaxed and euphoric, and dispensary menus describe it as sedating, heavy and calming. The onset is usually a warm, happy head buzz that quickly moves into the body. Within an hour many people are settled on the couch, and at higher doses it can end in sleep.
This is a nighttime strain. At close to 30% THC it hits hard even for regular consumers, so newer users should start with a single small puff and wait. Plan to stay in once it lands.
Mule Fuel Terpenes, Aroma and Flavor
Mule Fuel smells like its name. Leafly’s flavor tags are tobacco, chemical and ammonia, and reviewers describe diesel and earthy notes, with GMO’s savory, garlicky funk underneath. It is not a sweet strain; the smoke is gassy and sharp from inhale to exhale.
Leafly’s terpene data lists myrcene first, followed by terpinolene and caryophyllene, though Leafly’s own description names terpinolene as dominant. Myrcene fits the heavy, earthy body, caryophyllene adds the peppery bite, and terpinolene may contribute a faint herbal lift on top of the fuel.
- Myrcene: earthy, musky and herbal, also found in mango and hops
- Terpinolene: fruity, piney and herbal, common in classic sativas
- Beta-caryophyllene: peppery and spicy, also found in black pepper and cloves
Terpene levels vary from grower to grower and batch to batch, so check the lab label on the package. Learn more in our guide to cannabis terpenes.
Side Effects and How to Use Mule Fuel
Leafly reviewers most often report dry mouth, dizziness and dry eyes. Because it is so potent and sedating, overdoing it can bring heavy couch-lock or grogginess the next morning. Hydrate, keep the first session small and do not drive.
If you are new to Mule Fuel, start with one small inhalation or 2.5 mg in an edible and wait before taking more; see our dosing guide.
Do People Use Mule Fuel for Medical Reasons?
Leafly readers most often say they reached for Mule Fuel during anxiety (39%), stress (26%) and pain (18%), and its heavy, sleepy finish leads many people to use it at bedtime. These are personal reports, not clinical evidence.

Growing Mule Fuel
- Flowering: About 8–10 weeks
- Height: Compact, bushy and stocky with moderate stretch
- Environment: Indoor or outdoor; SeedFinder calls it best suited to indoor growing
SeedFinder lists a flowering time of about 60 days in its summary and 8–10 weeks in its cultivation notes, with compact, stocky plants, moderate stretch in bloom and moderate harvests of dense flowers. It was only ever sold as regular seed, and most of it is now sold out, so most growers run it from clones. Those dense buds hold moisture, so outdoor growers in wet Pacific Northwest autumns should keep airflow high and watch for bud rot.
Home-grow rules depend on the state: adults can grow at home in states such as California (six plants per residence), Michigan (12 per residence) and Oregon (four per household), while Washington and Illinois allow home growing only for registered medical patients.
