Moby Dick is a sativa-dominant cannabis strain bred from Haze and White Widow, known for a loud lemon, incense and cedar aroma and a buzzy, talkative head high. It comes from the Spanish seed company Dinafem, which says the strain put it on the world cannabis map. Dinafem lists 17 to 22% THC, and the effect is energizing first, with a long tail that can get heavy at higher doses.

Where Moby Dick Comes From

Moby Dick is the signature strain of Dinafem Seeds, a seed bank based in Spain. Dinafem lists the genetics as Haze crossed with White Widow, and Leafly and AllBud give the same two parents. Dinafem’s own page credits the work to a breeder it calls King Kush and says the strain is what made the company known around the world. The breeder rates it about 60% sativa and 40% indica, while AllBud puts it closer to 75% sativa.

The name is a nod to its size. Outdoors, Dinafem describes plants that can pass three meters with yields measured in kilos, and AllBud ties the whale name to those big harvests. Over the years it has collected a long list of awards at Spanish cups, including a first prize outdoors at the Copa El Punto in 2007, according to Dinafem. An autoflowering version also exists.

Leafly lists Total Paralysis as one of its offspring. Because the Haze side is a long-flowering equatorial sativa line and White Widow brings resin and structure, Moby Dick sits in the same family as many European Haze hybrids of the 2000s.

Moby Dick Effects: What It Feels Like

Leafly reviewers most often describe Moby Dick as talkative, focused and euphoric, with a buzzy, motivating head high. AllBud users report euphoria, focus and happiness, and describe it as clear-headed but still relaxing. The onset is quick and mostly mental: conversation flows, music sounds better and small tasks feel easier to start.

Dinafem is blunter about the top end. It calls the effect very strong and psychoactive, bordering on psychedelic, and long-lasting, with a narcotic edge as it wears on. That matches what many people find with Haze hybrids: a small amount is a sociable daytime strain, while a big dose can feel racy and then leave you parked on the couch with the munchies. Leafly calls it suitable for newer and experienced consumers alike, but newer users should start with a puff or two.

Moby Dick Terpenes, Aroma and Flavor

Dinafem describes a strong, piercing aroma of lemon, spices, incense and cedar over a classic Haze base, and passes along one grower’s description of it smelling like the pew of an old church. Leafly users tag the flavor as citrus, menthol and flowery, and AllBud adds lemon, pine and sweet. Expect a sharp citrus and wood note on the inhale and a spicy, slightly sweet haze on the exhale.

Leafly’s terpene data lists terpinolene first, followed by myrcene and ocimene, although its written description calls myrcene dominant, so the exact order varies by batch. Terpinolene fits the fresh, piney and floral side, myrcene adds an earthy base, and ocimene brings a sweet, herbal lift.

  • Terpinolene: fruity, piney and herbal, common in classic sativas
  • Myrcene: earthy, musky and herbal, also found in mango and hops
  • Ocimene: sweet, herbal and woody, also found in mint and basil

Terpene levels vary from grower to grower and batch to batch, so check the lab label on the package. Learn more in our guide to cannabis terpenes.

Side Effects and How to Use Moby Dick

Dry mouth is the most common complaint, followed by dry or bloodshot eyes. Leafly and AllBud both list paranoia and anxiety as possible at higher doses, which is typical of Haze-heavy strains. Dinafem also warns that it can bring on strong hunger. If you are sensitive to racy sativas, keep the dose small and avoid it late at night.

If you are new to Moby Dick, start with one small inhalation or 2.5 mg in an edible and wait before taking more; see our dosing guide.

Do People Use Moby Dick for Medical Reasons?

Leafly readers most often say they reach for Moby Dick during stress (30%), depression (25%) and anxiety (20%), and AllBud users mention mood, headaches and appetite. These are anecdotal reports, not clinical evidence, and the racy Haze side means some people with anxiety will find it too stimulating.

Growing Moby Dick

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Flowering: 60–70 days
  • Yield: About 650 g/m² indoors; up to about 1,500 g per plant outdoors
  • Height: Tall; up to about 3.5 m outdoors
  • Environment: Indoor or outdoor

Dinafem lists an indoor flowering time of 60 to 70 days, indoor yields around 650 g/m², and outdoor plants that can reach about 3.5 meters and yield up to 1,500 grams each, with harvest from mid to late October. Leafly notes a relatively short flowering period for a Haze cross and natural resistance to mold. Indoors, its stretch means training or an early flip is worth planning for. A mid to late October finish is late for wet autumn climates like the Pacific Northwest, so outdoor growers there should watch the big colas closely for mold or use a greenhouse.

Home-grow rules depend on the state: adults can grow at home in states such as California (six plants per residence), Michigan (12 per residence) and Oregon (four per household), while Washington and Illinois allow home growing only for registered medical patients.
