Where Sunset Comes From
Sunset is tied to Leafs By Snoop, the cannabis brand associated with Snoop Dogg. Leafly says the strain was made by Leafs By Snoop and lists it as an indica, and AllBud says it was created for the Leafs By Snoop brand. Neither names the parents. AllBud says the lineage comes from an unknown combination of hybrids and that the breeder has kept it secret. Leafly records three other names for the same strain: Sunset OG, Cali Sunset and Miami Sunset.
Because the name is so generic, Sunset is easy to confuse with other strains. It is not Sunset Sherbet, which is a Girl Scout Cookies by Pink Panties cross, and some automated listings mix the two up. Leafly lists Sunset MAC and Apple Sherbet as descendants of Sunset, though it is possible that some of those breeders used a different Sunset cut. We found no documented awards.
Sunset Effects: What It Feels Like
Reviewers agree that Sunset is a body strain. Leafly calls it a THC powerhouse with heavily physical effects, and its top reported effects are sleepy, relaxed and tingly. AllBud describes a creeper: it builds slowly, starting with a heady lift before settling into deep physical relaxation, and reviewers there warn about couch-lock. AllBud’s effect tags include body high, happy, relaxing, sleepy, sociable and uplifting.
Reviews on Leafly are more mixed than the ratings suggest. Some people mention giggles and munchies, while others report racing thoughts, and paranoia is the most common negative. That is a sign to go slowly. Because it creeps, wait a full 15 to 20 minutes after the first hit before deciding you need more, and keep it for the evening.
Sunset Terpenes, Aroma and Flavor
Leafly describes the flavor as earthy and spicy, and AllBud describes a spicy, flowery anise taste with hints of fresh fruit and wood on the exhale, over a spicy, flowery, earthy and piney aroma. Leafly’s reviewer tags are less flattering, including ammonia, woody and chemical, and a few reviewers called the smoke harsh. AllBud reviewers mention citrus, cream, gas and vanilla, which again suggests some variation between cuts.
Leafly’s lab-style data lists caryophyllene as the dominant terpene, followed by myrcene and limonene, which fits the peppery, earthy core of the reviews. Buds are described as dark or olive green with orange hairs and heavy trichome coverage.
- Beta-caryophyllene: peppery and spicy, also found in black pepper and cloves
- Myrcene: earthy, musky and herbal, also found in mango and hops
- Limonene: bright citrus, also found in lemon and orange peel
Terpene levels vary from grower to grower and batch to batch, so check the lab label on the package. Learn more in our guide to cannabis terpenes.
Side Effects and How to Use Sunset
Leafly reviewers list paranoia, dry mouth and dizziness as the main negatives, and some mention anxiety, headaches or nausea. Couch-lock is common at higher doses. With a slow, creeping onset, overdoing it is easy, so take one small dose and wait.
If you are new to Sunset, start with one small inhalation or 2.5 mg in an edible and wait before taking more; see our dosing guide.
Do People Use Sunset for Medical Reasons?
Leafly reviewers who answered most often mention anxiety (29%), stress (21%) and depression (19%), and AllBud’s listing adds chronic pain and insomnia. Paranoia is also one of the most reported side effects, so people prone to anxiety may react either way. These are self-reports, not clinical evidence.
